"Please, Kai. She's only a child." You breathed, visibly exhausted after another long day; this man just didn't seem to want to treat a young girl like a proper human.
The head of the Nine Precepts stared at you, no emotion hiding behind those steely, golden eyes. "A child with a purpose." He responded. "We need to use her. I can't waste my time on pleasantries."
"Pleasantries? Kai, it's a basic necessity! She needs some comfort, someone to trust! At least a few toys! Something!" You begged, almost throwing yourself at his feet. "Please!"
"She already trusts you." He pointed out. "What more does she need?"
Your patience was wearing incredibly thin, and you swore that you would sever the intimate, romantic relationship the two of you shared (only known to yourself and the Precepts) if he still refused to give the young one some small form of comfort.
"Something to occupy her time, so she isn't always living in fear! You should aim for her cooperation, not simply take what you need by force! She needs toys, Kai, or a friend!"
"Children's toys." He muttered to himself, quietly; he acknowledged the unspoken truth - you would have no qualms with shattering his heart if he did not comply. Besides, despite all evidence to the contrary, he always wanted to please you. He was already sort of forcing you into a life of relative solitude, residing in the underworld of Japan. If he released you out into the open for any length of time, without a chaperone, it was likely that you would be taken advantage of. After all, you were an extremely attractive female in her early 20s, eyes twinkling with all the different constellations. The Yakuza boss was willing to do anything to keep you safe, to hide you away - whatever it would take.
The intensity of your gaze was scorching him, far worse than the rays of the sun ever could. "That can be arranged." When he noticed that sad little glimmer of hope in your eyes, he added, "But nothing else. The fear makes her compliant - I need to be sure she won't try to run."
"Run? How could she?" You cried, tears beginning to well up, and heart sinking. "You keep her in a tiny room, all alone. She talks to no-one, I hear her sobbing all the time! I can't stand it, Kai! If you don't take drastic action, I will leave you, and I will take Eri with me."
The threat resonated, thrumming in his ears. He didn't doubt you. Actually, he completely believed your words. In spite of your situation, your will was very strong, your heart crafted from gold. The maternal instincts you possessed were raging in the presence of this tortured young girl - she was the daughter you could never have. Still, you understood her predicament. She had been kidnapped, essentially, which you loathed. There was nothing you could possibly do to save her, of course, yet you were able to act as a sort of guardian. Kai didn't quite know this, however. He always thought you were so strong, but the reality was far from it. You were scared to death of this man, this cold-hearted, evil man. He assumed that you would escape if and when you wanted, but you stayed for two main reasons: (1) Eri and (2) a deep-rooted, psychological fear of Kai Chisaki.
He was the man, the myth and the legend, and for as scared as you were, there was a near equal amount of love. Well, perhaps it was love, perhaps it was simply infatuation. Maybe you were more in love with the thought of Kai, rather than Kai himself. Perhaps Stockholm Syndrome was the real explanation, yet you could never tell. You wanted to know just what bound you so tightly to this man, and to the innocent little one he had captured.
Alas, he was an enigma that you would never fully crack. You weren't a code-breaking genius like Alan Turing*, and the leader of the Precepts was perhaps more dangerous than the entire German army. This was one battle you were never going to win.

*He cracked the enigma during WWII, and I mentioned him because he's going to be on the back of the new £50 note!
