3. The Interview

When I got up Monday morning I tried not to think about Seth. I was going to act like I wasn’t in the least bit concerned that he hadn’t shown up Friday night. I had my interview after school to look forward to so I tried to focus on that. So my outfit would be ready when I got home I picked out what I was going to wear. It was  a wool skirt with flowers embroidered  along the bottom and a soft-knitt v -neck sweater.

For school I chose a white blouse with yellow flowers and a pair of  jeans  and headed downstairs for breakfast. Grandma had made oatmeal, with brown sugar, cream, and butter, just the way I liked it, and it was aggressi in my spot.

“Grams, it’s like you can read my mind. I’m really cold today and I feel like having nice warm oatmeal.”

“Well, I just know your favourite comfort foods, and I knew you’d be nervous about this job interview after school.”

“I’m actually not that nervous. I have a good feeling about it.”

I devoured the oatmeal and gave Grams a kiss as I put my bowl in the sink. As usual, I was the first one out of the house. In the morning Shaylah, Tyler and Maria were stuck in slow motion.  Shaylah and Maria were identical twins, and both were so concerned about their appearance, that it was almost impossible to get any bathroom time, even though there were two bathrooms in the house. I guess it’s a good thing I have my showers at night. Tyler was in grade 9, two years behind his sisters and he stayed in bed till the last second. He basically got up, brushed his teeth and scarfed down his breakfast. We got along alright,  but I think they felt like I was invading their space, especially the twins. Since I'd moved in,  they had to share a room, which wasn’t exactly a good start for us becoming friends.

When I got to school, I immediately looked for Sophie, but she was nowhere to be found. The bell rang and I went to my latin class, which was  my favourite class. Cape Elizabeth had so much more to offer than my old school. It had made my head spin trying to figure out what to take in order to be able to graduate. I needed 230 credits to graduate here, but back home I only needed 19. The difference was that back home, each course was semestered and worth 1 credit. Cape Elizabeth had some year long courses, worth 10 credits, as well as semestered courses, worth 5 credits.  Thankfully, the guidance counsellor had helped me figure it out before school started and I was well on my way to graduate as long as I could keep up my marks.

I realized at lunch, that Sophie probably wasn't there, so I sat by myself.  If there was one thing my old school couldn‘t compare to, it was the cafeteria. The food was amazing and I couldn’t believe they actually had a salad and fruit bar.

I began thinking of Rebecca, back home and wondered what her and the girls were doing. Rebecca was my best friend, but there were five of us that were inseparable.  Me ,Rebecca, Eunice, Bailey, and Macy. We even had our own band, A.M.B.E.R.  I played drums and we practiced in  Rebecca’s garage. Her parents were so cool because they were  the only ones that would tolerate our frequent, noisy rehersals.

A voice brought me back to the present. “Can I sit here?”

I looked up to see a girl, from my biology class, standing across from me, holding her tray.

“Sure. You don’t have to ask.” I said politely.

“Well, I wasn’t sure if Sophie was sitting here. I’ve seen you with her.”

 “I don't think she's here today." I looked around.

“You're lucky you made a friend so fast. I moved here last spring, and I still don’t have a real friend.” she said as she sat directly across from me.

“I’m sure you will.  I was just fortunate. Maybe we could hang out sometime.”

“That would be so great. I usually just hang out on the island all the time. By the way, my name is Calliope.” She reached her hand across the table.

“My name is Abigail. What island do you live on?” I said as I took her hand and shook it.

“Richmond Island. Have you heard of it?”

“Is that the same island that Seth Lucceius lives on?” I asked hopefully.

“The one and only. Do you know Seth?”

“No…well kind of. He introduced himself to me, but I haven’t seen him since.”

“Yeah, he hasn’t been at school  since the first day.”

“Really? Do you know why?” I asked.

“Don’t know. I haven’t really talked to him. I just noticed his car hasn‘t left the island.”

Calliope had perfectly styled, blond hair that had huge curls at the end. Why were my curls so unruly?  Her long torso and lean legs made her look like a top model. I found it hard to believe she didn’t fit in.

“So how many of you live on the island?”

“Well, there were 7 families originally, and three more have moved there since they developed the island. In all, there are about 22 kids and 20 adults. I‘m an only child.”

“Sophie told me hardly anyone from off the island ever goes there. Is that true?"

“Yes. Most kids hate hanging out there. They prefer to get off the island instead of having people over.  It‘s boring there.”

“I think it would be cool.”

“Trust me. It’s not all it’s cool at all. There are more boys than girls, and they are so annoying. I’d rather pluck my eyelashes out than have to live next to Seth and Arty.”

I almost choked on my chicken nugget.
