Askova asked if anyone had any ideas on how to escape the school, but no one had any, except Emma, the 6th-grade girl.
" What if, we distract the dead again, like the fire, and we run to one of the working buses. Then we could escape from here," suggested Emma. " But after we do, where do we go?"
" I don't know, Emma. Hopefully a refuge full of food, clothes, and weapons." Askova was telling everyone their parts for the plan.
" Askova, what if we die trying to get out of here?" questioned Lindsay.
" Then we die. It's life," answered Askova, shaking her head. She walked to Ms. Rivera, the science teacher and told her that, she needs to find all the wood and rulers that she could find.
" Rulers?" asked Ms. Rivera.
" I don't know, rulers are the only wood-like thing that I can think of," replied Askova. Isn't it strange to think that a 7th-grade girl is taking charge of a group that is full of adults? Well, I don't, so don't criticize me.
Everyone did what they were asked, and reported back to Askova. Askova had to find more lighters, because she used the last of her moms lighter, to create extra heat. She found 1, and it was almost empty, so she had to make it count.
In total, they had 23 chairs and 17 rulers for the wood-like stuff, 1 lighter that was almost empty, a flashy ring, knives that came from the kitchen, non-rotten chicken patties, canned food, and 8 water bottles and a half-full water bottle. Askova told them what they needed this stuff for.
" We need this stuff to escape," explained Askova.
" Yeah, we got that part," replied Derek.
" We need the wood to create a flammable source, so the dead will get distracted." Everyone nodded agreeing. " We need the lighter to light the wood, of course, but it's almost empty," sighed Askova.
" Is it enough to light the wood?" asked Derek.
" I hope, but we won't be able to use it after that," explained Askova. " The reason, Mr. Haunn, I told you to get at least 6 sharp objects, is because you guys need to learn how to fight. Or else you're going to be stealing stuff from other people, and we can't do that." everyone looked terrified.
" Askova, we don't want to fight them!" exclaimed Ms. Rivera.
" Ms. Rivera, do you want to live, or not?" inquired Askova.
" Of course but--."
" Then you are going to need to learn how to fight. I'm sorry," apologized Askova. " We need the food and water for obvious reasons." Everyone agreed. " Derek, why did you bring me a flashy ring. I told you to find a backup for distraction," asked Askova.
" It is. It flashes and they need sound, movement, or light to be distracted right? So I brought that back," explained Derek.
" Ok, fair enough," replied Askova.
" Good for bringing back medicine, Emma. We need it," complimented Askova. Askova told everyone that they needed to be calm, and brave in order to escape. They agreed.
Askova and everyone went to their lockers and put on their coats, and then they climbed on the roof. They all helped throw the chairs and rulers over the edge about 10 feet away from the building. The lighter wouldn't light.
" Come on! Light!" Askova was frustrated. She couldn't light the lighter. " Work! You have to-," the lighter lit. Everyone gasped in relief. The dead were closing in on them, so they need to be quick with the distraction.
