4. Alex & Opal

"Namjewel , I think Alex and Opal are trying to unfuse." Hopal said, stopping dead in his tracks, feeling light headed and funny.

The Gems had only been looking for a place to stay for about an hour, walking up and down the beach in search of something appealing and close to the water (for Sugilite).

For some reason, Hopal's gems had been getting restless the entire time, and now, they wanted to unfuse.

That was probably what Hopal hated the most about being a fusion. His original gems could be really bossy sometimes, even though it was their decision to be fused 95% of the time because they were better together. However, when they decided they needed time apart, Hopal had to obey. It was a little aggravating.

"Well, go hide somewhere and let them out to stretch their legs." Namjewel advised, seeing nothing wrong with it.

Hopal huffed a little but did as he was told. He discreetly hid beside a small building, grumbling a bit before letting his gems take control.

In a bright flash of light, Alex and Opal came unfused.

They both landed on their butts in the sand and took a second to collect themselves.

Alex was the first to feel the overwhelming difference between Home World and this new planet. The wind prickled differently on his purple skin and it moved through his lavender curly locks weirdly. The unfamiliarity of the place gave him the creeps, and not the usual creeps he got. Naturally, he immediately felt unsettled and slowly scrambled to Opal for safety, the new gravity making his short legs feel heavier and move slower.

Opal was taking in his surroundings excitedly with wide blue-green eyes from behind long black bangs. He also began to feel the difference in the world's atmosphere but his red skin was prickling with goosebumps from amazement. He found the simple colors, variety of tall specimens and weird, strong smells mesmerizing.

Then, he felt a shaking Alex press into his side, so he snapped out of it quick.

"It's ok, buddy. We're ok." he said in a soothing voice, feeling how fast Alex's heart was beating in his own chest.

Being a rare mystic gem with mind abilities, Opal had the ability to hear what others thought and feel what they felt if he truly wanted to. It really helped his relationship with Alex because sometimes he was too frightened to get out what he wanted to say.

Alex's inclination for fear was very contradictory to his natural ability as a protector. Purple gems tended to have dimensional powers. In Alex's case his dimensional power was the ability to change his size and mass. Even though he was very easily frightened, he was not easily beaten. The two fused were a good asset to The Gems, which was known as the team possessing every special ability category known to gemkind.

Namjewel, a brown gem, helped cover the mind ability category with Opal. He possessed neuroplasticity powers, or the power to alter people's brains and memories in order to make them do, say, or remember what he wanted them to once he touched their temples.

Seokjem was a half diamond gem who covered the combat ability category. Diamonds naturally are superior to other gems in combat because they are born with knowledge of all combat styles and their gem has two more layers of protection than the average gem, making them less vulnerable to blows made directly to the gem. Since Seokjem is only half diamond though, his protection layers are the average two instead of four.

Then there was Sugilite, who was a purple gem like Alex. His dimensional power was shapeshifting. He could turn himself into anything of his choice.

Jemin was a pink gem covering the illusory category. Pink gems possessed different powers of illusion. Jemin's powers specifically were the abilities to replace what people saw with what he wants them to see and to be able to put people in a dream-like state where they can't hear or see what is going on around them for a certain period of time.

Lastly, Taezanite covered the nature ability category. Blue, green and yellow gems were nature gems, born with the ability to control elements of nature. Blue gems could command water to do whatever they wanted, as was Taezanite's ability.

The problem with some special abilities was that they were either contact or location dependent. Namjewel, Jemin and Opal's abilities required contact, which was hard to get during battle. Taezanite's ability was dependent on being near water because otherwise the scale of his ability was decreased considerably. With this in mind, all gems are usually trained in combat regardless of their special abilities just to have something to fall back on if your ability is useless in the setting or circumstances of the battle. Sugilite, Seokjem and Alex were a few of the lucky ones.

"We should probably cloak, then go catch up with the others." Opal said, pulling both himself and Alex to their feet.

And they wasted no time doing so. Once cloaked, Alex and Opal looked like mere children. Though over a hundred years old, to the humans, they didn't look a day older than 6. Alex was a small, tanned boy with beach blonde hair. He wore a plain purple t-shirt and shorts-coveralls but no shoes. Opal was pale and still had long midnight black hair. He wore a black shirt with shorts coveralls that matched Alex's and also no shoes.

Joining hands, the two walked out from beside the building they'd hidden behind and onto the beach. Though Opal had said they should find the others, he couldn't ignore the urge to explore. Everything around them just looked so interesting and his gem would just crack if he didn't go see more.

Alex was worried about the others wondering too far without them but he followed behind Opal quietly anyway because he knew regardless, he would be safe. As long as Opal was around him. The boy's gentle grasp on his hand as he meandered through humans gawking at things reassured him. So the long amount of time they spent walking around didn't bother him one bit.

As long as Opal never let go of his hand, it was ok.
