The history of Captain Marvel in comics is not highly refined, with multiple incarnations and shifts in power level. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Danvers was raised by a misogynistic father, which eventually led to her growing estranged from her family. Upon enlisting in the United States Air Force, Danvers befriended fellow cadet Maria Rambeau, who she soon began to live with. Danvers volunteered to fly a plane powered by an experimental Light-Speed Engine developed by Dr. Wendy Larson (otherwise known as the Kree scientist Mar-Vell). During the initial test flight, a Kree special operations team known as Starforce grounded the plane and assassinated Mar-Vell. In the desperate attempt to keep the Light-Speed engine out of the hands of the Kree, Danvers destroyed the engine, unknowingly unleashing the cosmic energies contained within. Being in immediate proximity to the blast, Danvers absorbed this energy and gained her cosmic superpowers.

Personality

Carol Danvers is witty, resilient, and determined. Even in times of stress and great danger, Danvers makes use of sarcastic commentary and light-hearted banter. However, Danvers does possess a fierce and serious side, which is often provoked when others are in danger. Strong in mind and body -- Danvers is an unstoppable force that can make any immovable object quiver.
