XANDER'S POV:
"I can't tell you."
Punch.
"One day."
Punch.
"I'm sorry."
Punch.
"I can't lose you too."
Punch.
"I love you."
Punch.
Punch.
Punch.
"You're scaring me."
Punch.
Punch.
"You're gonna tear the poor punching bag apart." A voice broke my trance.
I turned around to find Paul and Nick leaning casually against the door frame.
"How is she?" I asked Paul while moving towards the mini fridge in the gym and taking out a water bottle.
I unscrewed the cap and chugged it down in one go.
"Fine. For now." he shrugged making me scowl at him.
"What do you mean by 'for now?'" I asked.
"What I mean is, the stress is not good for her specially after what happened today. Her brain is already experiencing shock. If it ever happens again, it can cause PTSD to occur. Not only relating to today's events but also past... unpleasant events because the feeling of shock and helplessness was the same for her in both cases." he explained making me gulp and look away.
"What did you do to her?" Nick spoke for the first time.
"I didn't 'do' anything to her." I scoffed.
"Alright then what did you say to her?" he rephrased.
"The truth." I replied curtly.
"Look man, I don't want to intrude or anything but that woman, lying unconscious up there in your bed, is the bravest of all. And she needs you right now to fight her battles not 'for' her rather 'with' her. Nick spoke sighing heavily at the end.
"I'm not the bad guy in this fuckery." I retorted.
"You think I don't know that? I haven't told her those exact words? I did and she still chose not to count on me for anything. I'm not talking about her past, I'm talking about her present. I don't care if I was busy handling shit here. If she needs, she needs me and I'll be damned to prefer anything over her." I finished.
Paul and Nick had frown etched on their faces and their eyes casted downwards.
"She called Leo. No, I'm not the jealous type or anything. But she's not Leo's, she's mine. It is my duty to protect her, if she can't do that herself, not my brother's. How many times can I welcome her with open arms when all she does is fuck me up?!" I yelled and ran a hand through my wet hair in frustration.
"Xander calm down. You can't lose your shit right now." Zanvil added entering the gym room.
"Too late." I remarked and he huffed.
"Go to her and make her understand, one way or another." Paul smirked.
I knew exactly what he was hinting at which made me chuckle slightly. Growing up in an environment which is male dominant, does that to you. I'm not belittling females here, I would never. It's just Mafia men always had special and twisted ways when it came to their stubborn women.
"For fuck's sake, the girl is drained and already lying limp." Nick rolled his eyes while trying to suppress his grin.
"Sure." I replied sarcastically and left the room to shower.
Of course I wasn't going to do any funny business partly because I was still mad at her.
I entered the room and saw her sleeping peacefully, tracks of tears visible on her face. My heart tugged upon witnessing such sight but I swallowed the lump and walked inside the bathroom.
After shower, I changed into some sweats and grabbed a wet tissue to wipe her face. She stirred a little but went back to sleep the very next second.
Tossing the tissue in the bin, I climbed in the bed next to her pulling her closer to my chest. She snuggled more into me and my face nuzzled in her midnight black hair.
The exhaustion finally wearing me off and soon I drifted into deep slumber.
----
I felt someone drawing circles on my chest and my eyes blinked open. The sun peeked through the blind causing only one ray of bright yellow light to enter the dark room.
I looked down to see Xenia looking up at me with an adorable pout and glassy eyes.
"Nope, not working." I replied blankly.
"I'm sorry." she spoke in a timid voice.
I tried to move away from her but she was not having any of it as she snuggled into my chest once again and held my bicep tightly with her small hands.
"Please." she whispered.
"You should probably seek comfort in other people, people you trust." I stated coldly and she flinched.
I don't know it was the words or the tone. Probably both. I'm a douche.
"Xan. Babe-" she started but I cut her off.
"Oh hell no." I said and moved away, getting off the bed and towards the washroom.
I knew exactly what she was doing or trying to do. She'd call me 'babe' and 'Xan' and make me listen to her and forgive her. Not so easily, not this time at least.
I hopped in the shower and after that changed into a charcoal grey Armani suit. I stepped outside to find Xenia curled in a ball and heard her sniffing.
My hands itched to comfort her but I didn't. Instead I walked towards the door and was about to open it when her voice stopped me dead in my tracks.
"I don't know why I called Leo." she spoke barely above a whisper.
"Easy, you don't trust me." I bit back but didn't turn around.
"Probably because I was scared of your reaction, that you would panic and kill anyone who tries to be an obstacle in your way." she said quietly.
This time I turned around with a glare plastered on my face.
"Damn right I would." My voice boomed.
She gulped but said nothing in return.
"Veronica and Adrian are coming back today and they'll be here to see you. Dad informed them about what happened. And I have been holding ten of my men in my basement since two days, you better be right about this." My voice was void of any emotion and she blinked at me.
I turned around to leave but what she said next, froze me.
"I know you received the corpses of kids two days after the funeral. I had to witness their deaths too."
