MARIANO'S POV:
As I sit in my office, my chair facing the window giving me a perfect view of the beautiful garden, a thought occupies my mind. The same thought that has been occurring to me since the past 18 months. The same question that haunts me every now and then. Where's my daughter? Where's Xenia? After the unfortunate incident, that is as fresh as a daisy in my brain, no one has been able to get a hold of her. Some say that she died in that massacre, or probably has been kidnapped while the rest assume that she ran away like a coward. But I know better than to believe such stupid assumptions of these mindless people. I know she wasn't present at the time of attack, I was there. I lost my best friend that day. I remember each and every detail, each and every face. I remember the number of caskets that were buried six feet deep. I can still hear the cries of their loved ones and I even remember that Xenia wasn't present at her family's funeral. I searched every nook and corner of this universe only to receive disappointment in return. I massage my temples, leaning back in my chair a knock was heard.
"Come in" the sound of my voice, tired. My wife, Angelina, walks in wearing a yellow sundress and looking as gorgeous as ever. However cheesy it may sound, half of my tiredness vanishes at the mere sight of her. She smiles her signature, heartwarming smile and walks towards me, spinning my chair so that I was face to face with her and sat on my lap. I mirrored her smile and leaned in for a kiss. She giggles but nonetheless, kisses me back.
"Are you thinking about her?" she asks after pulling away and cupping my jaw with her right hand. I sigh and rest my head on her shoulder.
"I failed my best friend, can't fail his daughter too."
"I beg to differ and I'm sure if she's alive, she has the same opinion. Xenia is more mature and understanding than you give her credit for. We lost 50% of our family that day including Alejandro's. I know it is hard for you but if it makes you feel better, you couldn't have done anything about it, it was meant to happen. Everyone only gets too live so much. We'll leave this world one day as well however I do agree with you on one thing. They didn't deserve, what they endured. They deserved so much better. People worshiped the ground they walked on, respected them like no one else, they did not deserve such a horrible fate. Not only you, but I lost Stana too. In fact, we all lost everyone. Alec would never want this for you, to blame yourself even though you know it wasn't your fault. I just hope that we get our hands on the traitor soon." her words soothed me it's like she always knew the right thing to say. But this peaceful moment was short lived as I heard the sound of gunshots coming from downstairs. Before I could wrap my head around the commotion, the door burst open revealing Leo.
"What is it?" I asked, my voice devoid of any emotion.
"It's the Russians, they're attacking. Again." he breathed out. We both immediately shot of the seat.
"Those fuckers are not taking anything or anyone away from me. Not again, not anymore." i said retrieving the gun from my waistband and handing another to Angelina. We immediately made our way downstairs.
"I think we have a rat." Leo's voice halted me in my tracks. My blood boiled at his statement.
"I mean think of it yourself, we were first attacked almost two years ago by the Russians and now today even though it is a strict rule in mafia to never attack on new year's eve because it is supposed to ensure peaceful begins. You know what it means if we are under attack today." he said.
"We'll see."I replied shortly. I was fucking pissed. questi russi bastardo.
By the time I reached downstairs, Xander, his friends and our other men managed to take a lot of them but I still had a gut wrenching feeling as if something was missing. Something bigger. I shot a masked bastardo who had his gun pointed at Xan. Angelina took cover behind the couch, shooting at multiple men. Finally after a couple more minutes, the white floor of our mansion was decorated with several dead bodies. Xander turned towards me, a cold look on his face.
"We lost 20 of our men who were guarding the mansion from outside. I th..." before he could complete his sentence more masked men barged through the back door and started shooting aimlessly. cazzo. We were outnumbered. Majority of our men divided tasks and went to receive the drug shipment that came in today and to check our clubs and warehouses as it was supposed to be a peaceful beginning . We were still shooting and fighting when out of nowhere, a gas fogged the mansion and I saw some man going towards Anna's room. Everything became dark after that.
XENIA'S POV:
I rolled in my bed for the umpteenth time. I landed six hours ago and as soon as I put a foot in this country, I got an uneasy feeling in the pit of my stomach but dismissed it thinking it's the paranoia. I groaned and got up making my way towards the bathroom. I need to take a shower and relax. I took my sweet time and came out after almost forty minutes. I threw on an off shoulder peach knitted sweater with denim shorts and white converse. I need fresh air so I collect my gun, phone and card. As i step out of my suite, my phone rings. The caller ID shows Frederick's name. I pick it up at once.
"Hello?"
"Capo, the Russi attacked and we're outnumbered." My eyes grow wide and I immediately disconnect the call and dialing Asher's number. He picks up after second bell
"Sup ba.."
"Gather our men, we're needed at the mansion, subito." I say interrupting his meaningless greetings.
"subito, capo." he said and hung up. I ran towards the elevator pressing the button to the ground floor. As soon as the elevator opens, I dash towards the parking lot immediately spotting my Audi R8. I roar the engine to life and sped towards the mansion. This is not how I planned to make an entrance. I park my car a couple of blocks away from the mansion and see others car approaching as well. Asher and V immediately gets out and run towards me.
"What happened?" V asked.
"Russi" I replied. I turn towards my men.
"Snipers at the roof, there's a ladder at the backdoor. The rest of you will enter through the back door with Veronica. Asher and I are taking the front."
"Si" they all nod and spread in different directions. As we neared the mansion, my heart thumped wildly because it was eerily quiet for a place that was under attack. I looked at Asher and he gave me the same confusing look. Reaching the gate, we saw dead bodies probably of the guards scattered throughout the passage that lead towards the main door. Dread slowly filled me as I was walking towards it. The door was slightly ajar and there was no one in sight.I kicked it open and cringed at the amount of blood. My new shoes.
"This is the calm before the storm." Asher said, standing beside me. I nodded and went in farther when the sound of muffled cries hit my ear. I followed the direction it came from and was met with a wooden door. I turned the knob careful not to make any sound and the scene that welcomed me boiled my insides.
