jack gilinsky

a few hours had gone by of johnson and i sitting in a large meeting room, listening to the plans of the next few weeks. it had been an exhausting morning, the day continually dragging on.

"so boys, we want to give you the rest of the afternoon off. how about we finish this conversation tomorrow over dinner? jack g, too bad your girlfriend wasn't here to accompany you. we'd love to see and talk with her. jack j, you still don't have a girlfriend, so i can't say anything about you" one of the members of our team said.

everyone in the room chuckled at the sentence directed towards johnson.

he scoffed, "one of the days im going to have a girlfriend and it will shut all of you up."

we all laugh once again, getting up to depart. it was so nice to be able to leave for the afternoon, not having to think about work until tomorrow night.

johnson sat beside me in the cab, though we weren't talking. instead, music played to ease the silence.

"aye jack" johnson suddenly says, slightly startling me, "can i ask you a serious question?"

"yeah, what's going on?" i ask, glancing over at him.

he lets out a heavy sigh, "what's going to happen when you and vanessa start to get really serious?"

my eyebrows pull together, "we are serious. what are you talking about?"

"i mean what's going to happen when you guys start talking marriage and kids? are you guys going to move out?" his question was the last thing on my mind.

"i don't know, man. i mean, we'd probably move out because we wouldn't let you move out because of our decision. we're not even thinking about that yet though, j" i truthfully respond, not understand why he's asking me this or where it's coming from, "why are you asking me this? is something happening with vanessa?"

he shakes his head, "if you're asking if she's pregnant, no. well, not that i know of. im just, it's been on my mind lately."

it was still bothering me that i didn't know why, "why's it on your mind?"

he shrugs, "you guys are pretty serious and i know that she's going to college, but that doesn't mean you guys can't get engaged or whatever. she's not going to be in college for six years or anything crazy, you guys are going to both have stable careers and probably want to start your life together, no? you used to say how being young and married, a young father, that intrigued you."

"i used to say that, yeah. and i mean, the thought of it is still nice. but vanessa and i have never talked about it. honestly, i don't even know if she wants kids, johnson. i've never really seen her interact with them, nor have i seen her giggle about them or anything when we see kids. im kind of scared to talk to her about it, but don't worry, i don't think it'll happen anytime soon" i explain to him, beginning to dwell on the future of vanessa and i.

with a sigh, he nods, "sorry i brought this up, g. it's kind of all i've been thinking about lately. though, today at the meeting when everyone laughed about me not having a girlfriend. i guess i feel like i am going nowhere."

the cab pulling to the curb, we get out and pay the man before walking towards the hotel, "bro, come on. that's far from the truth. you don't need a girl, or anyone, to go somewhere in life. you're talented and we're growing. you're obviously going to find the special one, just when the time is right. do you really see yourself dating right now? is that a good idea right now?"

as we're walking, our conversation continues, "i don't know, gilinsky. i've just never found the girl that clicks with me, makes me indescribably happy, and who isn't going to use me. i've never found anyone like vanessa who makes you so happy, comfortable, and loved. am i ever going to find her?"

"you're going to find her, stop being an idiot. i never thought i'd find a girl like vans, but i did in the most relaxing way. i wasn't stressing about having a girl or not finding her. we were so busy that a girl was the last thing on my mind" i explain, "that was, until i met her."

he nods, "makes sense. thanks bro."

finally teaching our separate hotel rooms, we each go inside and say goodnight to each other. really, all i was thinking about was the future.
