"To go on adventures, all you need is a book."-My friend
--

"I'll drive over to your place later." I smiled to Nick, who was insisting for me to stay with him in the car.

He rolled his eyes exaggeratedly, "How later?"

"Your   version of later." I shot back as I reached to the back seat to get my bag.

"What's that supposed to mean?" He asked glancing at me curiously, half expecting a smart remark.

"It means I may or may not cancel." I replied casually, my eyes widened in surprise that I actually said that out loud.

Why did I just say that?

His eyes widened slightly, "Ouch, I was not expecting that." He laughed awkwardly and he scratched the back of his neck.

I bit the inside of my lip and winced, "Sorry, I-uh-"

He let out another laugh, "Don't worry about it, I deserved that. I know I'm not the most reliable person when it comes to texting and calling."

I know. I hate it.

I smiled awkwardly at him, glad I hadn't offended him.

"Just call me when you're on your way." He smiled as he looked over to my house.

We made eye contact for a second before I smiled back and nodded, "Will do."

"Hopefully Jackson didn't rat you out. I'm hoping you don't get into too much trouble for last night." He said as I opened the car door.

I glanced over to him as I let out a small laugh, "I don't think he would tell on me. I have lied for him plenty of times, he owes me a few."

Nick nodded and laughed, "That's fair. That's what siblings are there for I guess."

"Basically that's all they're there for." I laughed.

I got out of the car and glanced back to Nick, who always made sure I made it through my front door. Once I opened the door I turned to Nick and I waved and he waved back, and I waited for him to drive off before I walked inside.

"Hailey?" I heard my mom's voice ring through the kitchen.

I winced. What lie did Jack tell them?

"Yeah, mom?" I replied nervously as I walked into the kitchen.

My mom was sitting at the kitchen table and looked up from her newspaper and stared at me.

"Why didn't you answer your calls last night?" She asked.

I bit the inside of my lip, "I- I uh, fell asleep."

She raised her eyebrow, " Were you with Sheri?" She asked.

Is that what Jack told them?

"Yeah." I nodded enthusiastically, "We were watching movies and we just accidentally fell asleep. I'm so sorry I didn't pick you up from the airport."

Her facial expression didn't change, "So, why did Nickolas bring you home?"

"He came over in the morning to hang out with us. He offered to give me a ride. Its nothing out of the ordinary, mom, Nick has given me plenty of rides before." I replied, hoping she didn't catch me in the lie.
