The quiet murmurs of people began getting clearer. I recognized the voices that belonged to my parents and Jackson. My eyes wanted to remain closed, taking in the calmness of my slow breathing. The quiet beeping that echoed off the walls matched my heartbeat which ironically relaxed me further. The strong scent of medical supplies and alcohol penetrated my nose: the smell itself was enough to keep my heart racing.
I let out a raggedy breathe and I slowly opened my eyes, squinting slightly from the immense light that was reflecting off the white tiled walls. My gaze landed on my parents whom were sitting on two seats and Jack whom was propped up against the wall as he rubbed his nose. Sensing someone's stare, Jack glanced up at me and his eyes widened at the same time that his shoulders relaxed, "Thank goodness you're up."
I smiled weakly and he walked to my side, "Hey, Jack."
My mom and dad slowly got off their seats and came over to me, "How are you feeling?" Dad asked.
"Weak." My voice cracked a bit, but I smiled.
"You'll be okay. The doctors said that you just need to stay overnight, but you're good." Dad smiled weakly as he reached for my arm and slightly squeezed it.
"Sounds good. But what happened?" I asked, I glanced over to Jackson, who most likely knew.
He scratched the back of his neck, "Uh, you reacted to some of the sesame seeds that got into your yogurt."
I furrowed my eyebrows, "Sesame seeds?" Why did my yogurt have sesame seeds?
He nodded, giving me the 'I'll tell you more later' look.
I bit the inside of my lip and nodded.
"I'm so grateful you're okay, Hailey. I was so worried about you. Jackson called us in the middle of work." She rubbed her eyes slowly, "I'm so glad you're alright." She kissed my forehead.
I smiled back, "Thank you."
"Your dad and I are going to the cafeteria, you two want something?" Mom asked as she glanced between Jack and I.
I shook my head and Jackson declined the offer.
Once they both left the room I looked over to him, "Okay, what's the real story?"
He sighed as he rubbed his neck, "The drug that Sheri used to spike your drink was still in your system and it reacted with the sesame seeds."
I frowned.
"It's okay. You'll be fine." He said quietly as he moved his chair over to the hospital bed I was laying on.
I nodded slowly.
"You're okay, okay?"
I nodded reassuringly and smiled weakly.
"Oh, and someone named Mitchell has been texting you." He took my phone out of his pocket and handed it to me.
I glanced down at my screen and saw that I had three missed messages. I smiled briefly before looking at Jackson who was staring at me. I bit the inside of my lip and placed my phone next to me, I'll just text him back later.
"Friend?" He asked as he lifted an eyebrow.
"No, husband." I replied sarcastically as I rolled my eyes and let out a small laugh.
He smiled widely, his teeth showing, before he rolled his eyes, "Only you can joke around after almost dying."
I smiled weakly, "You can't loose me that easy. I still have to fulfill my roll as the annoying sibling."
