Chapter Two
I moved my hand from under the warm blanket, slamming my phone screen trying to silence the piercing noise that woke me up. I yanked the blanket off the top of my head instantly being hit with the cold morning breeze. A breath of air left my lips and I pushed myself up leaving the warm cocoon of my heavy blanket. Warmth hit my feet as I stood on the fluffy carpet Luke put in my room. I headed downstairs after grabbing my phone already loading up Spotify. I turned on my playlist of songs I absolutely love being heading to the stove. Clanks later of me struggling to find frying pans to make pancakes.
"Something smells nice," Luke voice echoed making me jump slightly before laughing.
"Something smells burnt," I pointed out frowning at the burnt pancakes.
"Do you even know how to cook?" He asked walking up to me also looking down at the burnt pancakes. I grabbed the spatula scraping the pan flopping the pancake on a plate before dropping the spatula.
"Not really," I admitted making him laugh slightly before grabbing a bowl and some cereal.
"How come you took this job then?" He asked heading towards the fridge and grabbing the milk before pouring some into the bowl.
"Honestly? I need the money." I told him sighing before turning the stove off, placing the pan in the sink and the pancakes in the bin as I won't be eating them. He nodded before also pouring me a bowl "shouldn't I be doing that?" I joked knowing that, that is my job.
"Sometimes darling you also need looking after,"
"I am shocked you are up though," I muttered eating a spoon full of cereal "you know considering it is currently 8am and you aren't usually up," I shrugged placing the spoon back in the bowl closing my eyes slowly eating the mouth full.
"The noises of you trying to find a pan woke me up," he joked making me roll my eyes and avoid his intense stare.
"I am sorry," I whispered shaking my head, my hair flying in front of my face making it hide the tears starting to fill my eyes over burning the pancakes.
"Sorry for what darling," he instantly said, not missing a beat as he stood up walking over to me and pulling the bar stool I was sitting on out slightly, moving my hair out my face, his own softening at my condition.
"For burning the pancakes," I said frustrated with myself "usually I can cook them well, but it's early and I failed. I don't want it to seem like I can't do this job and just used you."
"I don't think you used me. It is early." He nodded before heading to his iPhone heading the familiar phone tone. "Hello? Send her in," he said the corner of his mouth slowly creeping up. The main door opened behind me making me turn slightly, my hands wiping the remaining tears off my cheeks cursing at myself for being so sensitive the first day on the job. A gasp ran out my mouth when seeing a bulldog-terrier run through the door that was being held open by the bald security guy.
A soft smile fell on top my lips completely replacing my last emotion as I watched luke fall to his knees almost instantly fussing the dog.
"Nicky this is Petunia," he told me making me nod "I hope you're ok with big dogs," he pushed making me agree
"I love big dogs." I informed him making him now nod,
"Thats good hopefully she won't have to go daycare as often now. My last maid didn't like big dogs," he frowned making me mirror his expression. I waddled over to where they were crouching down. A giggle escaped my lips as petunia put her front paws on mine wanting attention of me. "See she loves you,"
"And I love her," I muttered picking her paws up and waving them around slightly making her flip over onto her back. My hands moved over to her belly giving her intense belly rubs. "I am shocked though with your busy lifestyle you decided to get a dog," I pointed out, my eyes not leaving Petunia once as I spoke.
I heard luke suck in a deep breath making me finally look at him seeing sadness filling his ocean eyes,
"I got her with my ex girlfriend," he muttered all emotion leaving his voice.
"Oh I'm sorry," I whispered hating the fact I am the one who caused the sad longing look in his eyes.
"Maybe I should take the day of work," he shrugged finally looking at me "if you're going to work for me. Maybe you should know more about me."
—
The corners of my mouth snaked up slightly petting the head on my lap fast asleep.
"So Petunia is yours and your exes dog?" I breathed out my attention not on the man in front of me, but on the head on my lap.
"She thought we were a forever couple and so did I," he muttered loosing his tie slightly as he was dressed for work before deciding to cancel. "Until I walked into my own room and saw her fucking another guy while I was away on a business trip," he said through gritted teeth making me regret asking the question.
"I am sorry," I said sadness filling my voice again,
"Stop saying sorry Nicky. It weren't you fault. It was kind of mine for trusting her to stay at my house while I was away," he shrugged before standing up and sitting next to me petting Petunias stomach as she was lying on her side. "I was stupid to believe she wouldn't do it again,"
"Again?" I screeched,
"She did it the first time when she was high so blamed it on that. And me being a stupid in love teenager I stayed with her," he simply shrugged rolling and cuffing his shirt and blazer sleeves up. "That's enough about me tell me about the woman I decided to hire with no information on except your friends with one of my workers,"
"There isn't much about me Luke," I smiled sadly,
"I want to know," he pushed making me finally look up at him,
"I come from a poor family Luke. Parents would try desperately to get money and we sold a load of our stuff. Never had the best of things," I shrugged "My sister took and got a job quite young to help out and I feel bad I never did so here I am."
"So the money I give you will go to your family," he muttered a smile ghosting on his face making me nod.
"Maybe like 50% of the money," I laughed closing my eyes.
"I guess I should bump your pay up," he spoke under his breath making me shake my head rapidly
"I don't want you to be my sugar daddy," I joked pushing his shoulder slightly, confused why I can easily treat my boss as my best friend.
"I didn't mean it like that Nicky. I want you to be able to support your family," he sighed rolling his eyes slightly. My head moved up and down praying he won't up my pay, not that I would notice anyway as it goes straight into my bank account.
His phone lit up by his feet making him stop petting Petunia and leaning forward grabbing his phone, an annoyed sigh travelling out his mouth.
"What?" He sighed annoy filling and lacing his voice thickly. "I took today off - because I own the place so can do that - you told me that meeting was tomorrow - and you didn't think to inform me that - you're lucky I'm in a good mood. I'm on my way." He threw his phone on the chair next to him running his hand over his face wiping his forehead. "I'm sorry Nicky. I have to go work," he told me tightening his tie again and rolling his sleeves down.
"It's fine it's your job, kind of like how I should be doing mine today," I sighed making him laugh.
"Take the day off. It is your first week after all," he ordered me grabbing his Porsche car keys before heading out the door muttering a quick goodbye to me and Petunia.
"Well Petunia, looks like it's just me and you,"
