Ch.5 Fading Away

Adam stroked Scarlet's cheek staring at her " You are so beautiful " .. She went silent for a moment not knowing what to say .. then she cleared her throat " where are we going to go ? "

Adam noticed that she doesn't look at him at all .. and he started the engine " If you don't mind .. I'm taking you to dinner " he said half smiling..

" alright ! " She could say no more in this situation .. she sat quietly feeling guilty .. blaming herself for all the pain he must be feeling.. How the hell can he stay there after what she did to him !?

Adam parked the car .. it was another January cold night .. 

" Happy birthday " Adam said giving Scarlet a present before he ordered dinner for both of them..

She looked at him for the first time that night and smiled widely.. " I don't know what to say but my birthday is next Friday " 

" I didn't want to wait so you might think Facebook reminded me ! " he said laughing .. " come on , open it " 

She opened the box to see a gold necklace with her name on it .. She held it carefully feeling so grateful " You have no idea how much I loved it .. " He got close to help her wear the necklace .. "You're getting prettier ,and I'm getting confused now " Adam said holding her hand ..

Scarlet didn't want to feel what she felt when he proposed cause that might hurt him again .. So, she pulled her hand slowly pretending nothing happened as soon as the waiter came with the dishes.. 

Adam stopped the engine and remained silent before he stopped her from going .. " Though my heart is broken but I can't break yours " Scarlet felt the tears shaking in her eyes before she kissed him goodbye .. 

She opened the door .. thinking about what happened this night smiling between feeling pain and feeling happy for having Adam by her side despite every thing  .. bittersweet..

Her phone rang too many times before she looked at the clock .. it was 2:15 in the morning..

" Hello !! Yes .. What ? Where's he now .. Okay I'm on my way " She jumped out of the bed .. not aware to what she's wearing and drove to the location the called gave her .. to find yellow tapes surrounding a smashed car and ambulance .. she wanted to cry but she couldn't approaching slowly not wanting to believe her thoughts till she found out what happened .. It was Adam's car .. A cop said " Are you his wife ?! You were the last one he called .. so we thought you're one of his relatives "

"I'm his fiance" Scarlet said before realizing tears streaming down her face .. she saw his mother crying .. Scarlet hugged her before she sat in her car .. she drove away before pain could kill her inside ..  she screamed not believing what she just saw .. " It can't be real .. It can't be real .. It can't be real .. I must be dreaming .. somebody wake me up " 

Nobody was there to hear her screaming .. she stayed in the car where she parked till it's 6 am already .. she can't go home now .. she can't be on her own .. she passed by her house to get dressed and take her notebooks .. she stayed in the car looking at the mirror talking to herself trying to act normally especially in front of other people .. but every time she tries to fake a smile she cries again ..till she heard someone knocking on the window.

"Hey , are you okay ? " Tiffany looked at Scarlet worried before Scarlet wiped her tears and got off the car not saying a word till Tiffany knew what's up and hugged her .. Scarlet tried to hold tears for hours and now she felt safe to cry ..

Scarlet retreated to herself to say " I'm sorry " not looking in Tiffany's eyes feeling lost in her grief.

"Come in to drink a cup of coffee .. You look pale and freezing " Tiffany suggested.

Scarlet sat on the sofa in front of the fire place holding a cup of coffee staring at the floor not even blinking, shocked.

" The police called me last night .. Telling me about a car crash and the driver was dead .. I'm the last one he called last night .. he saved my number as "love" so they thought I was his wife .. I hurried to find the scene as my mind imagined .. I didn't know what to do .. " Scarlet said and tears were shaking in her eyes..

Tiffany sat close to her " I know how you feel .. I know how hard it must be .. but I think you need time .. and don't hold the pain inside .. cry .. crying sometimes is the only way to throw it all away .. " 

" Last night he told me that he wouldn't break my heart though I broke his .. he doesn't know what he did to me ..  ! " Scarlet said.

Tiffany held her hand to calm her down .. " shhhh ! he must be in a better place now " 

Scarlet wiped her tears before telling Tiffany that she has to go, she felt that she must go ..It's 9 now and Scarlet went to work to finish her classes and she headed home .. she thought of the most safe place to be when she's scared "her room"

Once she got in the house .. her mum stood there feeling sorry " I knew what happened to Adam .. I'm so sorry " her mum hugged her. Scarlet felt like crying again but she was to tired of crying .. She stayed up in her bed for an hour before she fell asleep..
