I walked to the soda machine at the end of the dark, filthy alley. The soles of my feet echoing in every puddle I step in. puddles of sewage, bile, and stale water.  I wanted to gag over the smell that lingered in the dark alley. A huff of cold breath left my lips and I shoved my hands into my pockets, getting closer and closer to the soda machine.

The neon lights above doorways flickered and buzzed in the cool night, flicker, flicker, flicker. All sound dispersed, except the buzzing of the neon, it rang loudly in my ears. As it got louder, the further away the soda machine got. It was as if I was walking in place. The alleyway felt as if it were never ending, and the machine was only a mirage in the far distance.

I quickened my pace into a jog, but still, I never got closer to the soda machine. Giving up, I turned around, only to find the opening of the alleyway to be just as far away as the soda machine.

what was happening?

I looked at the soda machine, then back to the entrance, where someone, or something, was standing there. It took a step forward, then another, and another. as it got closer, I took a step back and turned around to run, but I still was stuck in place.

I looked behind my denim covered shoulder and watched in horror as the thing got closer, now on all fours with their bones twisting and popping out of place. A scream left my lips, and I tried to run to a neon covered door, but just like the soda machine, they too were out of reach. I reached out with all of my might, running as fast as I could, as my life depended on it.

Snarls and growls emitted from the gnarled up creature racing towards me. Warm tears ran down my cheeks, taking black mascara along with them. My lungs were burning as they were lacking oxygen, but I couldn't focus on the pain, only my will to live.

The beast was right behind me, I knew it was too late. Trembling, I turned around and came face to face with the monster who was chasing me, which slowly stood up, towering over me.

Its body was mangled and disfigured as if every bone in its body was dislocated or broken. It has prominent cheekbones as its cheeks were hollowed out, non-existent. The monsters jaw butter out, in an extreme underbite with broken teeth poking out from its lips. Their skin was a sickly gray as if they were dead. I gulped, and it furrowed its brows.

A gurgle emitted from its lips and it screamed, saliva droplets landing on my face. I closed my eyes in fright and prepared for the worst as  it shoved me down onto the disgusting, filthy water. It screamed once again, then it was gone.

I slowly opened my eyes, and steadied my breathing. I sat up and looked around, seeing if the creature loomed near, and thankfully, it wasn't. I was a couple feet away from the soda machine, so I stood up, with my bones popping and twisting.

i made my way to the soda machine, put in a quarter in the coin slot, and pushed A7, dispensing a diet cola. As I watched the soda push forward and fall to the bottom of the opening of the machine, I noticed my reflection, which caused to to scream to the top of my lungs.

I was the monster.
