"Oh come on, Liam, you're not giving up, are you?" I asked the freshman with a challenging smile on my face. Like I had done every Tuesday for the past month, I was helping him train to get on the lacrosse team between classes.

The younger teenager threw his head back in his neck. "You catch every single ball that I throw, it's just not fair," he complained.

Little did he know that he was actually right. My fast superhuman reflexes made it more than easy for me to catch the balls he sent my way. For me, that was one of the perks of being a werewolf, but to him it made this game of lacrosse pretty unfair.

I threw the ball back to him and he caught it with his stick.
"Maybe you'll get it this time," I told him, shooting him another smile while getting back into my position as a goal keeper.

"You say that every time," Liam stated while rolling his eyes. He turned to me, the ball resting in the net at the end of the stick, ready to be thrown.

"A quitter will never reach its goal." I turned my own stick in between my fingers until I got a good grip around the object. "You got this, bro," I encouraged him, paying attention to his movements and waiting for him to throw the ball.

My attention shifted as soon as I saw someone run across the field in the distance. My eyes narrowed slightly as I tried to identify who it was. A deep frown formed on my face as I recognised the person as Riley.

When the sound of out of breath panting mixed with the growl of a werewolf reached my ears, my eyes went wide.

I barely noticed the ball shooting right past my head and into the goal. I hadn't moved a muscle to try and catch it.

Liam bumped his fist up in the air. "Yes! Finally!" He exclaimed, doing a little victory dance as he had finally scored.

Dropping my lacrosse stick I rushed forward, panic shooting through my veins as I saw my best friend head towards the forest in her werewolf shape.

As I passed Liam I patted his shoulder in a rush. "Good job, I gotta go now, I'll see you next week." After the words had tumbled out of my mouth I immediately started taking a sprint.

"What?" Liam blurted out, looking after me confusedly.

I didn't have time to explain it to him. Speeding up more, I tried to close the distance between me and her.

"No! Riley, don't go into the forest!" I yelled after her, instantly fearing the werewolf traps and the hunters that could be out there.

Of course she didn't listen. Her pace only quickened; her fast footsteps heavy and crushing the leaves and twigs on the ground. Ignoring my warning, she ran straight into the forest, surrounding herself with the safety of the trees.

Only the forest was anything but safe right now for a werewolf and she had to get out of there as soon as possible.

I cursed loudly while running after her, following her off the path and deeper into the forest, zigzagging among the trees. "Riley, stop!"

Her heavy panting filled my ears as she ran out of breath but she didn't slow down for a second. I couldn't force my legs to run any faster and her head start prevented me from catching up with her.

Every muscle in my body tensed up when my eyes landed on the tripwire that doomed up on her path. It was tied between two trees just above the ground. "Ah shit," I breathed out harshly as she didn't change course and was heading straight towards it.

In her unfocused state of mind she seemed to completely miss out on the trap in front of her. And even if she had seen it, she was going too fast to stop in time.
