I had never driven home so fast.

Pulling up to our single house at the edge of the forest, my jaw clenched together as the first thing I noticed was that all the other vehicles were gone.

Not bothering to properly park my car, I turned off the engine and jumped out. With a racing heartbeat, I slammed the door shut behind me and hurried across the porch to the front door.

"Dad!" I yelled once I got inside the house. The only response I got was the steady ticking of the clock that hang inside the living room, painfully reminding me of the fact that every passing second mattered.

My eyes scanned over the crumbled covers and pillows that were still spread all over the couch from were Killian had spent the last few nights.
"Killian? Sophia!"

Grabbing onto the banister, I took big steps running up the stairs. "David! Andrew? Is anyone home?"

I pulled the door to my father's bedroom open. The place was more of a mess than my room was: the air mattress David had slept on took up most of the room's space, clothes of the two men lying everywhere on the ground. But all their other stuff was gone. Phones, jackets, weapons, it was all gone.

Cursing loudly, I slammed the door shut again. I didn't even bother to check the attic, because I knew for sure that Sophia and Andrew were gone with their stuff as well.

Biting my lip harshly, I took my phone and called my dad's number. "Come on, come on, come on," I pressed the device to my ear and waited impatiently. "Dad, pick up."

I roughly went with my hand through my hair as the sharp beeping of the dial-tone echoed through my head. "Please just answer the phone," I mumbled softly.

The feeling of relief washed over me as soon as the sound of my dad's voice reached my ears: "I'm not available right now, you know how this works." But then I realised it was just his voicemail.

"Damn it!" I threw my phone against the wall as the loud curse left my mouth.

Dropping my head in my hands, I breathed out harshly, my mind running over the things I could do. It stayed blank, making my shoulders sink down in defeat.

Just like that, my dad had grabbed his stuff and left again. No warning, no last hug, no goodbye, nothing.

It's what I had grown used to over the past few years. The only difference now was that he was bringing someone I deeply cared about into a terrible danger. And I had no idea where he could have taken her, or how I could help her.

All I could do was fear for her life.

And right now, I was beyond terrified.

RILEY

A soft whimper fell over my lips as I started receiving my consciousness back and my senses slowly awakened from their numb state. The first thing I felt was the suffering of my still partly paralysed body.

My leg was aching badly from the bullet injury. An unbearable headache was keeping me company, probably caused by the amount of blood loss, the poison in my body and the harsh smack my head had received when I passed out.
