ZACH

"Do you hear anyone coming yet?" I asked Jonah, looking up at him from the forest ground.

I watched him concentrate for a brief moment, then he shook his head. Releasing a deep sigh, I repositioned myself with my back against the tree. Lifting up my knees so my legs curved into a forty-five degree angle, I let the weapon in my hands rest against my upper tights.

Jonah glanced past me, worry displaying on his tense features, and I knew he was keeping an eye on Jack - who had been stuck in the werewolf trap for a little over four hours by now.

Jonah and I stood guard, as well as Corbyn and Lexa further down to Jack's right. We had created a big gap of distance between us and the trap, just enough to make sure it didn't influence Jonah's hearing.

I wondered what the ultrasonic emitters sounded like, since it was impossible for my ears to register the incredibly high sound. I had watched enough werewolves react to the trap, and I knew the sound was painful enough to drive them crazy.

I looked behind me and watched the curly haired werewolf from a distance. He was on the ground, shifted and growling, but I knew it was just an act for the cameras. To be honest, I was impressed by the way Jack handled himself. Not many werewolves managed to stay in control once the high-pitched sound got set off.

When he looked up, probably feeling my gaze on him, I looked directly into his glowing eyes. Their bright, golden colour wasn't hard to miss in the shadow of the forest.

I swallowed, the feeling of uneasiness building in my stomach making me look away. I fumbled with the tranquilliser gun in my hands and harshly bit my inner cheek.

"Can I ask you something?" I hesitantly asked Jonah.

The older guy moved his eyes away from Jack and gave me a questioning look, that somewhat encouraged me to continue.

"It's something Riley said," I told him softly and took a moment to wet my lips. "Something about the colour of her eyes."

Jonah didn't push me to go on but patiently waited instead, giving me time to sort out the thoughts that were running around my troubled mind.

"What did she say?" He asked calmly, scanning over my face with an observing look in his eyes. I didn't precisely understand how, but he seemed to be receiving a lot more information from my body language than my words - almost like his heightened senses enabled him to read me completely.

"That I was supposed to know by her eye colour that she was innocent," I told him. "Because they glow gold."

Jonah tilted his head, a slight frown forming on his face. "What do you know about our eye colours?" He asked, leaning with his back against the tree on my opposite side.

"Um." I rubbed a hand over my chin. "I know your eyes glow red because you're the Alpha."

Jonah nodded and raised his eyebrows at me, silently asking me to continue.

"I've seen Beta's with either golden eyes or blue ones, but I figured that's something genetical." I rose my shoulders in a shrug. "You know, like human eyes."

Jonah stopped me with a firm shaking of his head. "No," he said. "That's not how it works."

He read the confusion off my face and pushed himself back onto his feet, standing up straight. "You're all wrong about the genetic thing," he declared. "Every werewolf originally has golden eyes, wether they're born or bitten doesn't matter."

An even deeper frown settled upon my features.

"If they become an Alpha they turn red, like mine."

I silently thanked him for not showing them and leaving his eyes their normal sky-blue colour.
