CHAPTER 63: PROTECTIVE

I raced into the house after Emmett and Edward, eager to find out what was happening. The house was eerily empty, the only sound's we could hear were coming from outside. As we raced through the house I barely had time to notice the destroyed furniture and the hole in the living room wall, which now allowed you to look straight through and into the kitchen.

I could smell the thick smoke from here and it clung to the inside of my nostril's, I wondered if I would ever get rid of it. Edward reached the back door before I did, Emmett was already outside. I followed my husband and we raced through the garden, past Esme's greenhouse that appeared to have been damaged in some kind of struggle. The pane's of glass were smashed and small shard's of glass lay scattered, all over the lawn.

The thick smoke was rising from the sheltered area of tree's surrounding the back garden of the house.

As I ran the most beautiful sound filled my ear's, crying. Henry was crying, which meant only one thing, he was alive. I swallowed the lump in my throat again as I realised my thought was missing two key word's, for now.

The realization spurred me on and I ran faster, now eager to get to Rosalie and her baby. My fear's seeming all the more real now we were here.

"Idiot's" Edward hissed under his breath, now just a few feet in front of me.

"What?" I called after him.

"I warned Jake" he called back as we reached the end of the garden and headed through the tree's. I could hear the wolves paw's thudding on the floor of the forest and another triumphant sounding howl filled the air.

"Warned him about what?" I asked, becoming more and more agitated by the second.

I didn't need Edward to answer my question though, as we broke through the tree's I found the answer I had been searching for.

A dishevelled looking Rosalie was pressed tightly to her husband's chest, her usually perfectly arranged hair now sticking out in uneven peak's on top of her head. Henry's cries were coming from that direction and it was only then I noticed his familiar curl's poking out from between them. I breathed a sigh of relief at the family reunion in front of my eye's. I stopped running and stood still watching them for a moment, realizing how grateful I was that they were still alive.

"What did you do?" Edward yelled behind me. I turned on the heel's of my feet to see who on earth he could possibly be talking to.

He was facing 4 wolves and I could see 2 more stood further back from them, with Jake between them. How had Jake gotten here before us? It took me only a moment to recognise the front 4 as Colin, Rich, Kayden and Brady. The two wolves flanking Jake were easier to recognise: Quil and Embry. Although the two of them looked to be cowering?

"I don't care" Edward continued- "We needed him alive to find out where Ness is" A loud growl came from Colin who stalked forward slightly, the fur on his back standing on end.

"So you detain him" Edward snarled "Jacob knew that"

"Jake?" I called, knowing I wouldn't get any answer's from Edward when he was in this mood. Jake's head snapped up in response to my call and his black eye's stared into mine, "Phase back, NOW" I ordered. Without argument Jake turned and headed back into the tree's.

Edward continued his one way argument with Colin; "And what about my daughter?" he growled "What about protecting her?" his fist's clenched together as he spoke and I stepped forward and placed my hand's on his.
