Night Shift

"Alright, we are going to stay here for a few days. While we are here we are going to refresh and gather supplies. They now know that we are out here, so we are going to take shifts during the night. We are going to be stealthy, quiet, and anywhere we go we do not go alone if it's out of sight from here." Devina already had a game plan, taking leadership.

All of us were sitting in a circle, listening intently. Even after being in this cave for a couple of hours, we all were on edge. I moved over to the entrance of the cave, where they had set up vines, and plants around it. This made it so much harder to find than it already is. I stuck my finger through the vines and moved it, just enough so I could see through it. The sun was almost down. We were going to need light.

"Hey guys, we are going to need to light a fire. It's getting dark, and I'll go hunting if you want and get a couple of birds or something." I looked over my shoulder and told them.

"Aiden is there a way you can warm up the area around us, without fire?" Devina asks.

"Of course I can, I'm only the best one here." Snickered the overdramatic twin.

"Keep dreaming." Vale jokes.

"As for food, we'll go in the morning. We are going to be here for a while anyway. And we may not be able to see so well in the dark, even though most of us have an extraordinary vision." Devina said. "Sorry Hailey, we still don't know much about your abilities, we have no idea what your capable of." She added.

"Alright." I agreed while going to a corner of the cave, Dakota followed.

We discovered that it's okay to talk at our normal voices, even though Aiden's voice tends to be louder than ours at moments. I smiled at Dakota who was now sitting across from me, he smiled back. I sat on the cool ground, with my legs stretched out and my hands at my sides. I let out a deep sigh, relieving some anxiety.

As it started to get darker, the temperature dropped. Aiden was doing a pretty good job on warming the small area up. I have no idea how he did it, but all I know that I was comfortable. I could stay up, I should stay up. This is all caused by me. Stop that Hailey, you couldn't control it. Great, now I'm having an argument in my head with myself. I grinned and chuckled. Maybe I was going a little bit crazy.

"I'll take the first watch." Even though it was still early, I let them know that I was going to take it. Whether they wanted me to or not.

"Okay, if you go anywhere wake one of us up and let us know," Devina said.

Well, that was surprisingly easier than I thought. I soon found myself playing with the small boy's hair, every now and then finding a knot then gently untangling it. I lost track of time while I was doing this and found the boy lightly snoring, sitting up.

I gently laid his head on my lap and continued playing with his hair. I'm sure that once I have to go out for my shift, then someone else will hold him. I looked down at the boy, who was sleeping soundly. He doesn't deserve a life like this, but this is better than being in there. Only they know what really happened to them. I only remembered that room. But they must've been through more.

That does it, we need to get out of here before he kills another.

I remember Aiden saying that the day that we made our escape. What could he mean by that? Kills another? Have they witnessed others being killed? I touched my hand lightly to my cheek, remembering that slap. That day that we all had to 'fight' each other, they clearly weren't trying their best. Devina must have acted like she didn't know that there were others, or else they wouldn't be acting like they've known each other their whole lives.

They know what they're capable of, but I don't. Does that mean that they have been outside? Been able to test their abilities and I haven't? I could think of everything that they might have done and I haven't. I got a sting of jealousy, but then I remembered that they very could've been through must worst than me. At this point I was so lost in thought that I didn't hear Devina calling me, telling me that my shift has started. I apologized and started to look around.
