A Fresh Start

I so do not want to do this. It's my first day of my last year of highschool. I hop out of my bed walk to my dresser and turn off my alarm I set it for 6am even though I don't have to leave until 10:30. I go downstairs and turn on the stove so I can start breakfast. While I'm getting the ingredients out my mom comes down the stairs and jumps when she rounds the corner.

"ONYX!! you scared me. What are you doing up so early?" my mother asked.

"Oh I'm making breakfast for everyone." I said and smiled at her.

She frowns and then quickly replaces it with a smile.

"Onyx, you know I make breakfast every morning and have since J was a baby."

" I knowww mom but you have to be at work by 7:30 which means you have to leave at around 7. You know you work now mom let me do this one thing pleaseeeeee."

"Okay girl I geuss." she sighs.

"Thanks mom I appreciate it. Now take yo butt upstairs and go get ready for work." I say as I kiss her cheek.

I start cooking again and I hear doors and showers starting and that's how I know my family is up and moving around. While I'm finishing up the eggs and getting the fruit ready I hear someone walking down the steps. The footsteps are heavy so that means it's either my brother or dad.

"Ooh momma you got it smelling good down here...Onyx? Girl the hell you doing in the kitchen? You know momma cooks." My brother Jaylen says.

"Quiet J mom know I'm cooking go and sit down food almost done."

"Alright dodo."

I finish cooking make everyone a plate with what I know they like and leave the rest lined up on the counter. I walk to the stairs and call everyone down. One after another all my sisters and my mom and dad come rushing down. They all sit at the table except for Solana. She grabs plates and helps pass them out. After the plates are passed out we all sit down and my parents pray. My siblings and I don't pray but we are still respectful while my parents do.

"Okay babies I gotta go or else I'll be late for work. Thanks for the breakfast Onyx. I love y'all." My mom say while kissing all our heads my dads lips then grabbing her keys and leaving.

One by one the table starts to empty and it just me and my dad. He doesn't have to leave for work till 8:30 so he takes his time getting ready.

"Onyx, darling?" He says

"Yes papa?" I question looking up from cleaning the table.

"Thanks for helping your mom boo I know she needs it with this new job and all." He hugs me and kisses my forehead before Turing to walk away.

"No problem. Plus you know I like helping." I yell after him

I finish cleaning then go upstairs to shower. Before I get in the shower I turn on the water all the way as hot as it will go then close the door. I go to my room choose my outfit and walk back in to my bathroom. As I walk into the bathroom my glasses steam up so I pull them off and try to refocus my eyes then I step in the shower. While I'm in there I do my shower routine, shave and try to avoid getting water on my head. After about 30 minutes I step out and moisturizer immediately. I then walk into my room air dry a little bit then the rest of the way with my towel and get dressed. I'm wearing a black hoodie with cut off booty short and knee socks. I sit at my vanity and take off my bonnet then unravel my twist. After that I apply a little oil to my hair and admire my self for a bit.

While looking in the mirror I smile. Looking at my smooth dark skin, white teeth, naturally long and curly hair, plump lips, almond eyes, and fat nose. Then I frown and my eyes close. I start to think about all the times I've been called ugly or burnt or compared to my lighter siblings. I'm the darkest one. All my siblings are at least 2-3 shades lighter than me.
