Chapter Seventeen

"Mommy!!" I heard faintly. "MOMMY!!" Caterina yelled. I jumped up half asleep and ran into her room. "What is it?! are you hurt?! cat???!!" I said trying not to panic. "I don't f-feel good." Cat said. "Aww. I'm sorry baby. You want mommy to make you some oatmeal?" she looked at me and I saw she really did look sick. "With blueberries?" she asked sweetly. "Yes ma'am. If that's what you want." I said as I went to the kitchen.

"Hey." Derek said seeing me enter the kitchen. "Oh. Hey." I said blankly. "...About last night-"

"I'm sorry."

"What?" I said annoyed that he cut me off. "I said I'm sorry. I was being an asshole and I shouldn't have said something like that to you."

I thought back to last night. The yelling. Me hitting him. My asthma attack. "I'm sorry, too. I let it go too far." I said with tears in my eyes.

What happened was that I was late getting home and he asked where I'd been. I said with Katie. We were having a girls night. He said he figured I was with my fuck buddy. Shocked I took a step back. "What the hell?!" I said anger rising in me. "You know!" he shouted. "Am I not good enough. I can't make a child to give you so we fucking adopt Caterina. What'll we do when we have to tell her that we adopted her?!"

"I don't know!" I yelled at tears brimmed my eyes.

Tension filled the room and we stood in silence not even glancing at each other. I thought back to the other night when cat was at a sleepover with kids from preschool. Derek and I... Well. You know. And Katie said I was 'showing signs' today. She bought me a pregnancy test but I haven't used it yet. I can't be pregnant. Derek can't...you know.

I took Caterina her oatmeal and she took a few spoonfuls and then handed me the bowl. "I feel like I'm gonna be sick mommy." She said. "Why don't you just take a nap honey?" I said as I pulled the blanket over her. "Okie dokie. I love you mommy." she said as she yawned. "I love you too baby girl." I said as I closed the door behind me.
