Crazy Love

Chapter Twelve

*November 22, 2018•

"Happy Birthday Babe." I hear Derek say as I'm slowly waking up. "Thanks Dweeb." I said sleepily. "We're going to the movies so get dressed love." He said as he left. We live in an apartment all to ourselves and it's nice. We're on the third floor so I can see the forest pretty well. It's senior year and I'm extremely excited.

"Did you have fun?" Derek asked as we left the movies. I looked at him with a big smile on my face and said, "Sure did Hun. That was great. Now all I have to do is see my stupid doctor and we can go home." He looked at me and sighed. I rolled my eyes as we got in the car.

When we got to the doctor there was all but good news about my tests. "Tavonda Sudduth?" the doctor asked if I was there. I shot up out of my seat and said, "Right here Ma'am." I looked at Derek and he looked back at me.

"Ms. Sudduth..." she trailed off. "Yes ma'am?" I asked

Nervously as I squeezed Derek's hand. "You have lung cancer. It can be treated but there is an extreme risk something could go wrong. I'll give you a few days to see if you'd like to have the treatment." She said before leaving us. "Derek, I-"

"It's ok. I'm going to be with you every step of the way I promise. I won't let you do this on your own." He cut me off.

The ride home was long and quiet. When we got to the apartment we sat and talked.

"Do you want to do this?" Derek asked. I thought for a minute and said, "yes. I can't leave you."

•Derek's POV•

It's been a few days since Tavonda was told she had lung cancer. Her eyes were somewhat grey and lifeless, she was ghostly pale and has lost a lot of weight over the past few days. When I went to check on her, my heart stopped. She wasn't breathing. "Baby please! open your eyes! I'm here! please!" I yelled as I cried.

I picked her up and ran to the car. I laid her in the backseat and drove as fast as I could to the nearest hospital. When we got there they put her on a bed and took her strait to surgery. "God damn it! let me go!" I yelled as several doctors held me back. "I can't let her do this alone. Please!" I said as I cried.

The next day I got to see her. She looked so much better. Her skin was pale but it was her normal pale. She had breathing tubes. When she woke up the doctors left us to be alone. "Derek?" She asked. I grabbed her hand and kissed her forehead. "I'm here Baby. I thought I was too late. I thought you weren't going to make it." She looked at me with her now bright blue eyes and said, "I'm ok now. I have a new lung. It'll be ok now. I love you Dweeb."

I looked at her with warm tears streaming down my face. "I love you too Babe." I whispered.
