Amber finally had everything she could ever ask for in life, everything was perfect until the war. A week after Amber and Bucky announced their engagement, her mother had passed away leaving the two siblings all alone. With the United States officially in the war, Mrs Rogers had been picked to go overseas as a nurse, however the medical center had been targeting with gas leaving no survivors. Steve had distanced himself from both Amber and Bucky, but with the persistent comforting he eventually came back around seeing as that they were the only two he had left. Amber feared that Bucky would be drafted into the war, that he would leave overseas and never return, she tried being her usual optimistic self but with all the propaganda it was hard not to think about the war.

While Bucky and Steve went to a movie, Amber went down to the store to pick up some supplies for the house. Since the death of her mother, Bucky had been spending more time at the Rogers house to make sure Steve and Amber were both okay, not that Amber minded. Walking back home with two large bags in her hand, Amber saw a man and a woman standing on her porch. "Can I help you?" she politely asked, "Are you Amber Rogers?" the man asked, "Yes" she replied, "My name is Colonel Phillips, this is Miss Carter" the man introduced. "We've come to assign you for a job in the war as a recruitment girl." Colonel Phillips said making Amber's mouth go wide, "I-I'm sorry, I-I don't understand" she managed to get out. "Your mother was one of our nurses, seeing as that you're eligible to take over that position the government would have you do so. However all our nursing positions are full, so anyone who can would be transferred to our recruitment area. You'd be working with me and a few other women who are being recruited." Miss Carter explained. "O-Oh" was all Amber could say, "We leave with the next shipment of soldiers in two weeks. These are your instructions and identification passes for security" Miss Carter said handing Amber a white envelope, nodding their heads in formality the two army personal walked off leaving a confused, shocked and worried Amber holding groceries on her porch.

Amber paced back n' forth waiting for Steve and Bucky to come home. What am I going to say? How am I going to tell him? She thought, hearing their voices conversing with one another Amber's eyes looked up but her heart dropped into her stomach when she saw Bucky walking up to her wearing a military uniform. It had happened, it had been drafted. "Amber? Are you okay?" Steve asked his sister, it was unusual for her to not to greet them when they came back from wherever they were. "I'm fine Steve, I'm just going to make dinner. Are you boys hungry? Of course you are, never mind, silly me" Amber rambled not daring to make eye contact with either of them. Steve and Bucky both shared a look knowing that her strange behavior had something to do with Bucky's uniform and they fact that he was now going overseas. Nodding his head Steve silently slipped away from the kitchen leaving them alone, Amber tried to hold back her tears as she stirred the pot of soup. "Doll... Amber, look at me" Bucky gently said, turning around Amber's tear filled eyes managed to look up into his blue ones, and that was all it took for her to break. Wrapping his arms around her Bucky let his broken fiancé cry into his chest as he tried to comfort her, "Amber you know I'll come home to you. I wouldn't leave you if I had a choice..." he gently trailed off trying to sound strong for her. Pulling back from his embrace Amber sniffled, "I'm coming with you" she told him, "Amber--" but she cut him off by handing him the white envelope she had been given earlier. "You... " Bucky trailed off not able to find the words he was looking for, "I've been recruited to work as one of the recruitment girls, with all the soldiers coming overseas they need more people to help with the recruitment process" Amber explained, now it was Bucky who had tears in his eyes. "You could get hurt" he pointed out, "So could you" Amber softly said back, Bucky pulled her back in for another hug. "We'll get through this, I promise"

Telling Steve felt harder than telling Bucky, Amber sat across from her brother with tears streaming down her face. With both her and Bucky being deported, Steve would be all alone in Brooklyn. "Please say something" she begged her brother, Steve reached out and grabbed his sister's hand with tears in his own eyes. "You promise to be safe? And write?" Steve asked, Amber rapidly nodded her head, "Of course" she told him, reaching out Steve hugged his sister the both of them in hysterical tears, "I love you Steve" Amber cried, "I love you too Amber, look out for each other"
