Chapter One
"SELINA!!!"
"WHAT BRUCE?"
"HOW DO I PUT THE BABY SWING TOGETHER?"
Selina sighed and rubbed her eyes before going down the hallway to help Bruce put the new baby swing they got at Denver's baby shower together.
He probably threw the instructions away, thought Selina. Men.
She walked in the room and saw the swing in pieces, Bruce red as a fire truck, and little baby Denver laid on a blanket, enchanted by a Batman plushie that Lucius got for them as a joke.
She crossed her arms and leaned against the door way. "Where did the instruction manual go?"
"I didn't think I'd need them..." Bruce mumbled and tried putting two pieces together. They didn't fit.
Selina walked over and sat down next to Denver. The baby cooed at her mother and tiny fingers wrapped around Selina's ring finger. "Where exactly did the manual go?" she asked.
"I threw it behind me and haven't seen it since." Bruce said looking over at her.
Selina rolled her eyes and looked around the baby room. The yellow paper was halfway under the closet door, and reaching over for it Selina sighed. "Bruce dear, the pieces have numbers on them."
Huffing Bruce asked, "Well what's that mean?"
"It means," Selina said sliding over to where he was sitting. "That the piece marked one fits with the piece labeled with a two." She grabbed the two pieces and snapped then together, forming the top half of the baby swing. "I knew that..." Bruce muttered.
Rolling her eyes Selina turned her attention to the little girl laying on the blanket. Picking baby Denver up she sat back down next to Bruce. "Hey. We need to talk for a second." Selina watched Bruce look at her with a look of worry in his eyes. Selina knew that he knew what she was going to say.
"I'm leaving next week."
Bruce winced and looked from his wife to the small bundle she held.
"Can't you stay for a little while longer?"
Selina closed her eyes, "Bruce,"
"No listen to me for a minute. You can't just leave without a reason. We have a commitment now. Denver needs a mother and a father. I can't do both Selina."
Dark brown eyes drilled holes into hers. The two sat in silence until a giggle interrupted them. Handing him the baby Selina stood up and began walking to the door. "You've known since we got married I didn't want to have kids Bruce. I can't raise a family knowing that my child will never be completely safe." Bruce's eyebrows knitted together and his smile turned into a scowl.
"You really think I would rope Dennie into hero work? Selina-"
"Don't deny it Bruce!" she screamed, "I know that she's going to find out at some point! How are you going to keep it a secret?"
He didn't reply.
"That's what I thought." She sighed and walked towards him again. "I'm having lawyer draw up some divorce papers. You can have full custody of Denver, but I need you to promise me one thing." Bruce couldn't meet her gaze. He felt a single unwanted tear drip down his face. Wiping it away he rocked his sleeping baby girl in his arms. "What is it that you want?"
Selina was now right in front of him. She placed her hand in his cheek and the other on their baby. "Don't tell her about me. I don't want her to think it's her fault I'm leaving." And with that said Selina walked out of the door, leaving Bruce with two huge problems. He now was a single father with no idea what he was doing, and his baby swing was still in pieces.

"So she's really gone?"
Bruce rubbed his temples and stared back through his fingers at his friend sitting on the couch opposite of him. Clark Kent was hunched over, hands folded and a concerned look in his eyes.
"Yeah. She left about a week ago. Haven't seen or heard from her since." Bruce rocked the baby swing that he had finally put together. Denver had fallen asleep in her swing, her small little baby fingers wrapped around her Batman plushie. Bruce smiled at his little one, glad that he was able to spend good fatherly time with his daughter.
"So are you, ya know..." Clark fumbled his sentence.
Bruce stopped rocking the swing and looked the Boy Scout right in the eye. Clark almost winced under the seriousness in the Batman's eyes. "Am I what?" asked Bruce.
"You don't really think you can raise a baby girl by yourself do you Bruce?" Clark was sitting on the edge of his seat. "With your jobs during the day and the night, you won't be able to be here for- for- I forgot her name."
"Her names Denver," Bruce growled, "and if you really think that I would just abandon my child you are completely and utterly wrong."
Clark muttered something like 'whatever you say' and asked his next question. "How are you going to tell the League? And what'll you do about the press? Somehow they haven't gotten word that millionaire playboy Bruce Wayne has a heir to the throne."
Bruce furrowed his brow and shrugged. "I'll tell the League when I feel like it, (cause you know, Batman does whatever the heck he wants.) and I want you to do the newspaper story. Because you and I both know that there will be someone who will botch the details."
Clark nodded and took a sip of his coffee Alfred had brought earlier.
"I just want you to know Bruce," Calrk said with a sincere tone. "Parenting will be harder than anything Batman or Brice Wayne have or ever will encounter."
Bruce grinned and ran a hand through his hair. "I guess I'm ready for anything."
