Eerie

I watched as Ethan polished off a third plate of pasta with sauce and wondered where he was putting it all. I was full after one serving, mostly because, although it was edible, it really wasn't as good as the Italian place downtown. I sighed and said as I rested my head in my hands,

"You know you really don't have to eat everything." He looked up at me in surprise and smiled,

"I know." He then took another bite as I shook my head,

"Then why are you still eating?" He set his fork down and looked at me as he said,

"Do you know the last time someone cooked a meal just for me?" I shook my head again as he sighed, "I can't remember the last time, but it's been years, since before...since before my mom was killed. So, I am going to eat everything." I placed my hand on his as he reached for his fork and said,

"Ethan, I will cook for you whenever you want me too, all you have to do is ask. So please stop, you are going to puke, and I really don't want to have to clean it up." He laughed and relinquished his fork. He then leaned back in his chair as he looked around the kitchen and said,

"Does being a vampire pay well? This place is huge." I laughed as I shrugged,

"I guess you could say that, I mean Baen has been alive longer than some countries, so I guess you learn to save and invest and such." I leaned back in my chair as well, "The order didn't pay well?" He snorted,

"You would think when you are saving the world from the things that go bump in the night you could at least get a decent paycheck, but sadly, being a hero is its own reward I guess." He then looked me in the eyes and asked, "So when are you going to go back to school?" My eyes widened as he continued, "I know you quit so that you could avoid me and everything, but you should really go back." I smiled,

"You're right I did, but it wasn't just to avoid you. I know I was at school first, but then you showed up, and it just sort of felt like it belonged to both of us, and I would see you everywhere, and every time it was more painful. So, I stopped going, and then I had Kai unenroll me until I could sort out my life, and the truth is I have a very long life to live and not a lot of time with you." He looked startled, "I know how you feel about vampires, and I would never ask you to become something that you hate so very much, so let's just make the most of the time that we have now. Okay?" He nodded and then leaned forward. He cupped my face with his hand and said softly,

"You know that you are some kind of amazing, right?" I nodded,

"You are just figuring that out?" He let out a sigh of a laugh,

"What can I say? I am a slow learner." Then his lips were on mine, and the world faded away in a whirl of fire.
