'Either you deal with what is the reality, or you can be sure that the reality is going to deal with you.' Alex Haley
"It sucks that we only have three classes the same period. I was expecting us to have more electives together since we picked the same ones." Karmen stressed while we walked into the cafeteria for lunch. It's been three days since school started and I'm still struggling to find the classrooms that I'm assigned in, even though we have a two story building, it has long and wide halls. On the bright side, it's been kind of nice seeing familiar faces of my peers, even though I haven't had a conversation with most of the students.
"Yeah I know. Yo smart butt has more advance classes then any senior here." we both stood in the lunch line, my eyes scanned the lunch room seeing most of the students conversing with each other, a few sitting on top of the lunch tables and administrators telling them to get off and a couple of students loud laughter being heard throughout the whole room. "I guess that's a good and bad thing, the good thing is that it will bump my GPA up and look good on my transcripts. The bad thing is that my mom will be breathing down my neck even more than usual so I can keep my grades up and have colleges accept me." she rolled her eyes as the line started to move more quickly.
I laughed, "Don't do momma Riveria like that, you know she wants the best for you. Besides, you got paid to tutor for summer school. Your brain is making you money." I spoke truthfully, Karmen has always had brains when it came to school subjects, especially math. She's the one who tutored Kendall during the summer which caused their friendship to blossom even more. The three of us weren't as close until this summer, I met Kendall at his dad's Baptist church with my aunt a few years back, which is why he has the nickname PK, short for Preacher Kid. Me and Kendall have always been cool, but we just never ran with the same circle of friends. He was basically my only friend after Karmen moved to California with her dad before freshman year and I was lonely until the middle of Sophomore year when she came back.
After getting our food, we found a empty circle table with a few chairs surrounding it, me and Karmen sat side by side, and continued our conversation, "You right, I was getting paid nine-fifty an hour to tutor students at the center and most weren't doing their work the whole school year, and when finals were coming up, they decided to do all their missing work with two weeks left, and PK being one of them. That's crazy to me," she shook her head before taking a bite out of her cheese pizza, "I didn't judge them tho', I was getting cash to help their dumbass. Hey, that rhymed." Karmen smiled.
I dabbed the greasy slice of pizza with my napkin, "Did you see Kendall come in the lunch room? I haven't seen him all day." I pondered, waiting for Karmen to answer me, "There he go right there." she pointed behind me, slightly turning my head, my eyes landed on Kendall sitting down at a table devouring his pizza. The people at his table were Huey, this girl named Journey who is in my English class and a boy with a honey brown high top who is taking place of Journey's seat on his lap, and he's in my english class too.
"Who's that boy with the high top? He looks familiar." I casually asked, "Elijah. He's the third piece of the trio between Huey and Kendall, and he's low-key the leader." Karmen answered before going into her black fanny pack to fetch out her clear lip gloss. My smallest memory of Elijah started to come back from two years ago, Sophomore year to be exact. He was the new kid and we had Algebra two the same period and I noticed he pulled out his Prince fan club membership card out to just look at it. I asked him how long he's been a member and I pulled mine out too, and that whole period we just talked about Prince and music just in general. We never had another conversation after that, I never wondered why until now.
