Me and Sam get our shoes on. I quickly grab a charger some earbuds and my backpack. When I get downstairs Sam wasn't there. "SAM!" I yell for him.
Then I see him running down the stairs."How are we going to get there?" He asks with tears in his eyes.
"I have an idea, come on." We leave and I lock the door. We run across the street to the Norman's. It was raining really hard but I hardly noticed it with all of the adrenaline in me.
It's funny how an amazingly beautiful night could turn into a terrible and stormy one.
I knock on the Normans door as fast and hard as I can. I was hoping they weren't asleep but it was only 10:30. I didn't stop banging on the door until Mrs. Norman answered. She was in a robe and her hair was wet. Once she saw our faces and our sadness she knew it was serious.
"M-My mom." I could hardly talk. "I just g-got a call she's in the hos-hospital. We need a ride." She nodded and let us in out of the rain.
"JACE!" She yells.
After a few seconds, Jace comes running down in sweat pants and a tight fit black shirt. His jaw dropped a bit when he saw us. He ran to me and hugged me. He didn't even know what was happening but he knew I needed to be comforted.
"Jace, their mom is in the hospital can you drive them there?" She says as she rubs my back in a circular motion.
He pulls away and puts his hands on my cheeks. "Yes of course." He says looking into my eyes nodding. "Let me go get my keys. I'll be right back."
"Okay," I whisper.
He runs to get his car keys from his room and we head to the hospital. It was silent until we were almost there. "Do you know what happened?" Jace asks.
"Um, there was a car accident." I wipe my nose with my sleeve and turn my head away from the window. "She's in critical condition, but she's stable." I was talking so quietly I'm surprised he even heard me.
"Well that's good, I mean that she's stable."
"Yeah but just because she's stable now doesn't mean she's going to stay stable." I point out. Jace takes my hand and holds it tight.
"She'll be fine." He whispers.
*In the hospital*
We run to the receptionist's desk and she gives up directions.
When we are almost there a nurse stops us. "Visiting hours are over."
"I got a call about 30 minutes ago that our mom was here. There was a car crash." I explain.
"You're Janet's kids?" She looks at me and Sammy. We both nod.
"Yes." We say at the same time.
She walks us to her room but we weren't allowed inside because she needed to rest. "What exactly happened?" Sammy asks.
"Your mother was hit by a drunk driver. They fled the scene so he wasn't apprehended. She has a few broken ribs, her wrist is broken, her neck was fractured, and there was some internal bleeding but we cleaned that up. She should be fine long term."
A wave of relief came over me as I heard that last sentence. If my mom dies I'll have no one left. My dad is gone I can't lose my mom too. Me and Sammy hugged each other
"Thank you," Jace said to the nurse. He could tell we were to busy being relieved to say thank you. The nurse walked away and we headed to the waiting area.
*1 am*
"Jace you can go, you don't have to stay here." It had been a few hours now and we were all really tired. Sammy was asleep on my right shoulder and Jace was on my left trying to get comfortable.
"No it's fine, I'm going to wait here with you." I leaned on his shoulder and he leaned his head on mine.
"Before everything happened tonight I had a good time with you. Sometimes I think that when something really good happens to me a bad thing happens after. It's like the universe wants to have a balance with my happiness." I whisper.
"It's all going to be okay, Gracie, and your wrong, it's the opposite. After you handle this the universe will reward you for being so brave. You'll be happy soon enough, I know it." He grabs my hand and brings it to his lips, kissing it.
