"Look, all I'm saying is you might have misjudged them," Virgil felt himself getting worked up again. He rubbed at his forehead, asking his boyfriend in the calmest tone he could manage, "Can we just drop it?"
"Oh, yes, let's move on from this unimportant issue," Deceit's voice dripped with sarcasm, and Virgil gritted his teeth in frustration.
"You don't like them? That's fine. But I'm not going to stop hanging out with them," Virgil crossed his arms, his statement final. He sat on his bed, watching a pacing Deceit with poorly concealed anger.
"Because they just love to have you around," Deceit retorted.
"I don't care about them," Virgil snapped, "It's Thomas who I'm helping by being there."
"And he adores your company too, doesn't he?"
"Doesn't matter. I'm helping him more than I'm hurting him if I'm around-" Deceit cut Virgil off, turning to look at him as if he was better, smarter- than Virgil.
"Listen to yourself. You're 'helping' him? Please." Deceit scoffed, "He screams every time you show up. Thomas doesn't want you around, Virgil. They don't want you around. I know they don't." Deceit saw the look on his boyfriend's face and immediately wanted to take back what he said.
"You know it, huh?" Virgil asked quietly.
"That's what not what I meant-" Deceit moved to comfort his boyfriend, but Virgil stood up quickly and pushed Deceit away from him.
"Sure it wasn't!" He shouted, throat raw. "God, can't you tell the truth for once in your life?"
"I tell the truth more than you give me credit for," Deceit said, his voice low.
"Yeah, but I can't fucking tell, can I?" Virgil asked, and Deceit flinched. "I think you're being honest, but- big surprise- I start to doubt it almost immediately. How much of what you say can I actually believe? What is actually true out of anything you say? God, I don't even know if your real name is actually your name! That could have been another lie, who knows? I don't even know what to believe," Virgil looked down, turning away from Deceit.
"You can believe this-" Deceit began, reaching for his boyfriend, but Virgil pushed him away again.
"Just shut up!" He screamed, holding his head in his hands. "Shut up and get out of my head!"
"What does that mean?" Deceit asked, confused.
Virgil looked up and Deceit was surprised to see tears in the other sides eyes. "I think... we should stop," He said, sounding resigned.
Deceit felt his stomach drop out. Virgil couldn't mean... "Stop? Stop what?" He stuttered, heart pounding.
"This," Virgil gestured between the two of them, his eyes sad. "Us,"
"Wait," Deceit pleaded, "The other sides-"
"Goddammit, this isn't about them!" Virgil raked a hand through his hair. "I- I don't-" Virgil looked away, tears openly falling down his face. "I don't trust you,"
A wave of cold anger fell over Deceit. "Fine, then." He said, heading towards the door. He grabbed Virgil's arm as he passed. "They'll never care about you," He hissed.
"Get out," Virgil replied, just as coldly.
As soon as the door closed behind him, Deceit felt himself start to break down.
God, what had he done?
