Chapter 2

I could literally feel my heart thumping in my chest. I felt terrible for saying that to Peeta. I was cruel and horrible to him when he was trying to comfort me at the time that I needed him most. I wasn't even thinking about his mother, father or siblings; I was being selfish and ignorant. I was just furious that the Capitol sent bombs flying down to those poor, innocent children.

Buttercup could feel how I was feeling so he brushed up against my shins. I squatted down to pet his silky fur that was smooth like a handmade scarf from the Capitol. He let out a purr of satisfaction, as he seemed relieved. "That's enough, now go", I said to him. Buttercup slowly dragged himself to the fireplace and got himself comfortable for a nap.

I glanced over to the clock. 7:16AM. Three hours to get ready.

I checked through the catalog that Cinna had made for me before the Quarter Quell and stumbled upon this elegant, black dress with thin lace descending from my shoulders going down to my wrists. It came with smaller accessories such as a necklace, broach and earrings to match.

I could get all of it for just one phone call to the Capitol where they made a special clothing boutique just for me. I started over to the house phone and grabbed it off of the receiver. I was just starting to dial in the number when a knock on the door stopped me in my tracks. I eyed the door suspiciously because I wasn't expecting guests today.

I had just opened the door and there stands my mother with her suitcase and purse, which she doesn't carry a lot of things in. She put on a smile to cover up her impatience that she was hiding. I didn't bother to ask why, I just let her in.We all knw she was here for Prim's funeral. I still wasn't bonding with her as much since she had some type of "break-down" since my father died in District 12's coal mines. Saddness filled her eyes and they were full of compassion.

"Hello, Katniss!", she said, knowing that I wasn't too surprised to see her.

"Hi", I choked out softly.

Buttercup jumped at her and started purring again, really loudly in my mother's arms. I helped her bring in the suitcase, which was light since she doesn't own much clothes. I placed her suitcase in the guest room and she was staring at me as I walked out.

She put down Buttercup and slowly started walking towards me. She gave me a hug, while fidgeting with my braid. My hair grew really long these past few months. It's really starting to get hard to comb out every day, so I'm deciding about cutting it.

"I really missed coming to visit you, Katniss" my mother said. I saw the sincere look in her eyes.

"Yeah", I was at a loss for the right words to say. 'Yeah' was all that I could think of.

I wanted to go but then my mother added, "Where's Peeta?"

I gulped with guilt. "He just left", I answered.

"Well, where did he go? I have something to give him."

"He just left....and what do you want to give him?"

"Nothing", mother wailed with sadness.
