Chapter 4

He started smiling from ear to ear while still kissing me. His lips were warm and moist. Just like on the night of his whipping. As the thought flew into my mind, I opened my eyes and quickly pulled away.

"What's wrong?" Gale asked. He made a frown.

"Nothing, I'm... fine"

His hands were gently resting around my neck. He started to pull me back to him again. The kiss lasted for about five seconds when my mother came in.

Her gasp was louder than ever. She looked as if she'd saw a murder unfold.

"Mrs. Everdeen, I swear nothing was happening. We were just-" Gale didn't really know what to say. If Peeta was here, he would've lied so sweetly that anyone would've believed him.

"Gale, I think you should go. Just go think for a while. You can come back for the funeral. But right now, you are not welcomed in this house. Do I make myself clear?!" My mother said in the most stern voice I've ever heard come out of her mouth.

"No!" I pleaded.

Gale got up and walked out of the house. He didn't turn around to say goodbye or anything.

I turned to my mother. She saw the livid look on my face and knew right away that I was about to yell at her.

"What the hell were you thinking! You can't rule my life now! I'm 20!" I screamed at her. I saw her tear up and started to stiffen her body. "Just get out!" I yelled

She ran out of the kitchen and to her guest room. She grabbed her suitcases with all the strength left in her body. She stopped to wipe tears that were falling across her face. She was at the door when she turned around to face me.

"Goodbye, Katniss!" She screamed and slammed the door shut.

Minutes later, the doorbell rang. I hope that is was my mom but it was only my dress.

"Sign here" Said the assistant. I signed.

I gave Gale the spare key to the forest months ago. I wonder if he brought it with him here. There was only one way to find out.

I opened the door and walked outside into the crisp air. Sweet, high-pitched bird chirps surround me. I can already tell that they are Mockingjays. I start to whistle Rue's whistle. Suddenly, the magical birds surround me. Their blue feathered wings were glistening in the sunlight. Their panicked sound was telling me someone or something was wrong. I ran down the quiet road . My feet were thumping on the concreted pavement. I soon reached the forest gates.

"Katniss!!!", a familiar voice hollered. It was Gale.

"Gale!" I shouted back. I knew he was in danger just by the sound of his voice.

"Katniss, help!"

That was all I needed to hear. I needed to get through the barbed, electric gate. I quickly found a nearby tree and started climbing. I didn't care about anything else in the world right now, but reaching Gale.

I've never climbed up a tree that fast in my life! I was on the highest branch of the tree that was sturdy enough to hold my weight. There was a tree over the fence. All I would have to do is jump and try to grab onto the other tree. I know I might sound absolutely crazy to any regular mind in the world, but I would do anything to try to get to Gale right now. My hope was all that was left. It was time to jump.

My heart was racing and I can feel myself getting light-headed at the thought of falling from about a 50ft, high tree, but no matter what, I will get to Gale. I had a million thoughts running through my head. Will I grab the tree? Will I fall? Will I injure myself? Will I survive? Too many questions, too little time.

I made my leap and grabbed a branch on the tree over the gate. Uh oh. There was a sudden crack. I was in panic mode as I frantically struggled to stay on the tree. Unfortunately, the branch broke and I fell to the ground. Instant pain rushed through my body as thoughts of the Hunger Games filled my mind. My left leg has been crushed from under my body when I hit the ground. I tried to move, but the pain was excruciating.

"Katniss! Katniss, help me!" Gale's scream was louder that anything I've ever heard. He must be around here, somewhere.

"I'm coming, Gale!" I shouted back.

Even talking has its own pain. I had to get up, I had to start running to Gale. He could be bleeding out or even worse.

I turned onto my stomach. I positioned my hands as if I was about to do a push-up. With one sudden burst of energy, I tried with all my might to get on my feet. My right knee was holding up my body now since my left foot is injured. I pushed with my hands to get my right foot to stand up. After about a minute, I was up.

I started a limped to where Gale's voice led.
