I just sit there and look at Chuck. "That's a waist of their time. Why would they need to-" I start but I'm cut off.

"Is it?" Newt asks from behind me. I turn around to see him staring at me with his arms crossed. Chuck has turned around too.

"Yeah. It's not that big of a deal. I don't understand why you have to have a gathering about me everyday," I say.

"You've been here two days, princess. You're different and we have to discuss it," Newt says.

"Okay, well I'm tired of being the special guest. The show pony, the new edition, the-"

Once again I am cut off, "We're just trying to keep everything maintained around here, okay? We don't need any more problems."

"What problems can humming a song lead you to?" I ask, now standing, facing Newt.

"What are you gonna banish her for soundin' like a pile of singing klunk?" Chuck jokes, but no one laughs.

I expect Newt to just roll his eyes or ignore him. But he runs his hands through his hair and looks at the ground. He looks nervous.

"What does that mean?" I ask.

Newt turns to Chuck, but Chuck just turns around. Why doesn't anyone want to tell me?

Newt sighs and looks back to me. "Banishment is... well, let's just say the worst alternative as far as punishment."

Death, I think, They're going to kill me because I hummed a tune, because I remembered a song. But everyone knows that's not really why. They may kill me because they're scared of my abilities.

Now I know my exact feelings for Newt. Hatred.

"You're going to shucking kill me because I remembered music?" I scream at him, surprising myself with my glader word choice.

Newt looks sorry for me. He grabs my arm and drags me outside.

"Get off! Stop!" I yell and pry at his fingers. But it seems like they're connected to me.

Once we are outside he lets go. Tears sting my eyes and gather at the bottom of my eyelids, about to spill.

He puts his hands on either sides of my head, forcing me to look into his eyes.

"You aren't getting banished. I promise," he says in a hushed voice. "Everything is going to be fine. Listen, the gladers, espically Alby, don't like change. They're scared of it," he says. His eyes worriedly dart from different parts of my face, looking for some sign of reassurance.

I bite my lip and blink away the tears.

"Do you understand what I'm getting at?" Newt asks.

"Yes," I whisper. It barely comes out, I'm not even sure if he even heard it.

"Okay, good. Your going to be alright," Newt says and pulls me into a hug. His hands move from my head to my back and I let my face lay against his shirt.

There's something about Newt. He has the ability to calm me down. He can turn me from an insane psycho to a normal person within 30 seconds.

I hug him back and say, "Okay."

"Come on hotshot, we gotta get to the gathering," someone says to the side of us.

We break apart and turn to face some guy, who's wearing a smirk. He must be one of the keepers.

My cheeks turn bright red when I hear Newt mumble, "bloody hell" under his breath as he walks away.

Since all the keepers are in a gathering, I can't try out the other job I had planned for today. But I don't really mind because I was supposed to try slicing after lunch. I know that I won't be doing that though. At least I hope so, but it's not my decision.

So once again I'm waiting outside a closed door.

I think about the song again, but don't dare to try and hum it. It's just a nice, simple song. I can hear the music in my head. It sounds like it's coming from a guitar. Then I remember a strange word, acoustic.

I don't even know what it means, but it has something to do with the guitar and the music.

I quickly snap from my thoughts to reality when the door swings open.

"Come on. We've decided to discuss this with you," Alby says and holds the door open for me.

I walk in to the same setup as last time, and sit down in my little chair. They all stare at me. Some angry, some blank, some confused, some scared.

Alby takes a seat and clears his throat, "Okay, so none of us can remember music or songs or anything like that. So, can you explain to us why you can?"

"No. I don't know, it just came to me when I was bored, so I started humming it," I say casually.

I know that I'm not giving Alby the answers he wants, but I can't because I don't know them either.

"It just came to you? Sure, shank," some guy sitting far to the left says. He looks mad at me.

"Shut up, Gally," some other guy says.

I'm really not liking this Gally kid.

Alby stares at his hands. He obviously doesn't know what to do.

"Okay, here's the deal. If you can remember things that we can't, who knows what else you'll be able to think of," Alby says.

"But isn't that good? That just might get us closer to getting out of here," I say, looking for some sign of hope.

Then someone surprises me by saying, "Greenie's right."

They all seem to start thinking about it for a few minutes.

"Why can't we just get rid of her?" Gally asks.

This scares me. Newt said that it wouldn't happen. Please let Newt be right, I think to myself.

I look at him for reassurance. He casually shakes his head and leans back, mouthing "slinthead" and pointing at Gally. I smile at him and then start to notice other boys becoming suspicious so I just start staring at the ground.

"Gally, shut up," the same guy from earlier repeats, getting irritated.

Alby turns to Newt and they talk quietly to each other. They're like brothers.

Alby turns back to face me.

"Okay, we'll just forget about it for now. Guess it's not too big of a deal. But we will be keeping an eye on it," Alby says and dismisses everyone.

I get up and walk out behind all of the other boys. But at the door I turn around. Newt and Alby still sit there. Alby looks nervous and it looks like Newt is trying to comfort him.

I walk out the door, a little nervous myself.
