A/N: Okay I have good and bad news. I like to deliver the bad first to leave on a good note.
So here it is; I haven't gotten any comments in a long time and it makes me sad. Everytime I log on, I look forward to the notifications that are comments from you guys. But I haven't been getting them lately. It makes me think that you aren't enjoying it or something and it really has me worried. So if you're reading this; please comment and tell me what's going on. Is this book still good or is it getting boring?
Okay so now for the good news; 3k!!!! Yay!!
I've become a monster. That's what it looks like.
I barely have the strength to turn my body ever so slightly, but I do. I face the woman who looks genuinely concerned for me.
"I'm sorry this has happened to you, but you did it to yourself. You should be back to normal within the next few days," she says.
I give her a curious look. I can't speak, but I try to use facial expressions to get more information out of her.
"I'm Georgia. But I won't be here for long, my shift is about over. Aliza will be here to care for you after I leave," Georgia looks down at her watch, "She should actually be here any minute."
Almost as if on cue, the door slowly opens and a young girl steps into the room. As soon as she sees me her eyes widen and she almost backs up. I don't blame her, I look like a crazed animal.
Georgia gets up to leave and Aliza takes her seat.
Once Georgia steps out of the room, there is an awkward silence for a few seconds as the new girl and I just stare at each other. There's nothing I can do. I can't talk, can barely move-
"Hi," Aliza smiles a huge toothy grin at me. All I do is stare at her. I can't even imagine how creeped out she is of me.
She looks very young, probably my age. Her hair is slicked back into a bun. She smiles at my as if she is happy to see me.
"One second," she says and gets up. She walks over to the wall in front of me and starts running a hand along it. What is she doing?
Her hand stops abruptly and she gently taps on something. Almost immediately afterward, she runs back and sits in the chair hastily.
"Okay, we don't have a lot of time. Brief explanation for the information I'm about to give you; I'm on your side."
What? What is happening? What is she doing?
"Okay. I came here to tell you that the Gladers are close, very close. They're about to get the code down, figure out how to escape," she says quickly.
The code? What code?!
"There's not much you can do. There's no way to get you out of here. If there was, I'd help you. Okay any second some examiners are going to come through that door when they figure out the camera isn't working. I froze their screens."
I point at where she had tapped her finger as if to ask, "Is that what you did just then?"
She nods, able to figure out what I'm trying to say.
I slowly trace a "N" in the air. She furrows her eyebrows together at first, but when I make the, "E" they slowly start to relax. I trace a "W" and a "T". Then she smiles, understanding.
"Newt? He is fine. I saw what happened in the Glade, between you two. You figured it out. Together. Truly amazing. You figured out some of your past by-" she quickly shuts up when the silver door swings open.
"Aliza, the camera froze," a man in a lab coat says.
"It did?" Aliza asks and looks over at the invisible camera she had tapped on earlier.
"Do you think you can fix it?" she asks.
"Yes, but we need to put her under," the stranger says and motions towards me. He acts as if I'm not even here, like I can't hear a word he's saying.
"Okay," Aliza says. She stands up as the man walks over to the invisible device.
At first she fidgets around with something, then looks at me. "Sorry" she mouths and then plunges a needle into my upper thigh. The same pain occurs as when the man told me that I woke up early. She was putting me out, or as this new stranger said, putting me under.
~
I woke up with no neck brace. Easily breathing. My hair was no longer a mess, as I could see it's smooth waves resting on my chest and stomach.
I could also easily move now, but there was no longer anyone in the room.
"Hello?" I asked, only saying it to finally get some words out.
Then I remembered all that Aliza had said. Something about a code and that the Gladers were close to escaping. Were they supposed to escape? She talked about it as if it were expected. But she also said that I couldn't get out.
I stood up and walked over to the mirror. I looked completely fresh, clean, and back to normal. Except one thing, those bloodshot eyes.
Almost as soon as I saw them, I collapsed onto the floor, fainting.
~
"I can't believe it's actually happening. This is crazy. You can't leave me here," I say to Newt.
He takes my hand and calmly replies, "It's for the greater good."
I slip my hand out of his, "What if you get killed? If I lose you I may as well lose myself."
~
It was a short but meaningful memory. I woke up in my white bed. I was really starting to hate this shuck room, I wanted out.
I looked around the room. No one.
But that quickly changed. The door swung open and then slammed shut. Aliza came running to my bed side.
"Eve! They're almost here! I have to go," she says and then turns to leave.
She did all of this for me... for nothing. She was obviously breaking the rules, perhaps risking her life. Who knows.
"Wait," I demanded and grabbed her wrist.
"Make it quick.
"How long have I been in here?"
"About two weeks," she says with sorrow in her voice. Doesn't seem that long, but when there is someone waiting for you... two weeks is a long enough time for hope to vanish.
"Thank you," I say quietly and let go of her wrist.
She runs to the door, swings it open and says, "I'm on your side," and with that she was gone.
And little did I know, everything was about to change.
