Eve's POV

Chuck is dead. Gone. Gally threw a knife at him and it killed him. Dead. I have no words. I didn't even get to say goodbye. Although I'm glad I didn't witness him being stabbed, I didn't get to comfort him as he slipped away.

Getting Newt out of the maze and having him back was the most important thing to me. But Chuck was my second top priority. And he's gone.

Tons of thoughts rush through my head as I jog beside Newt to the door.

Was this door going to open up a world of freedom? Or new obstacles? I couldn't decide, but either way we had escaped the maze, and I had Newt back at my side.

When we reached the door I grabbed his hand, and he kicked it open. We took a brief moment to take in our surroundings. It was bright- almost blinding, and it seemed that the whole world was covered in sand. The weather was hot and dry.

Then we were off. The others weren't too far ahead, and they all seemed to be boarding a bus. Newt and I ran up to the bus, eventually standing behind Minho in a line, well more like a mess, to get on.

Thomas was soon right behind us, and I noticed one rescuer holding up the back of the line.

Rescuer? Is that what I was going to call these people? For some reason the title just came to me, but it didn't seem quite right.

A strange noise interrupted my thoughts, and I turned to see what it was.

A woman, severely injured, with scabs, cuts, sunburns, and bruises was limping towards Thomas. She looked completely insane.

"Are you gonna save us?!" she laughed, "Don't believe them!" She kept repeating those last three words as she slowly walked towards Thomas.

"Everybody get on the bus! Move!" the rescuer next to Thomas shouted.

The line started moving a lot faster with people scrambling to safety and soon enough everyone was in.

I could still barely hear the woman screaming those words as I sat down in a seat next to the window. Newt sat down next to me, closing me in.

The bus took off, and I noticed that we were moving right in the direction of the crazy lady. A big thump confirmed my theory. They ran right over her, but kept on moving. Never even slowed down. Maybe these people were crazy themselves.

There was a rescuer behind Newt and I. I heard her saying things like, "your safe now," and "everything's going to change". I also heard her responding to a few questions and explaining a few things. But I was too tired to attempt at paying attention. Although part of me wanted to relax, trust these people, and believe that we were finally free, most of me disagreed. Most of me was staying alert, being careful with who I trusted, and not letting myself get too hopeful in fear of being let down.

But for right now all I wanted was to sleep.

I put my feet up on the seat next to my butt. Then I put one hand around Newt's bicep, (although it didn't fit all the way around) and pulled him closer to me, resting my head on his shoulder.

With his other hand, he pulled the hair back that hung over my face and tucked it behind my ear. He kissed me on top of my head and I felt him chuckle as I slowly drifted off to sleep.

"Eve... It's time. Wake up," Newt said and gently shook my shoulders.

I jolted awake, immediately alert.

"Woah... slim it princess, it's only us," Minho acted serious at first, but then smiled at me. I just realized that I haven't said a word to him since my last day in the Glade.
