A/N: 2k already! Thank youuuuuuuuuu! Also sorry it kinda took a while for this to be written, I couldn't decide what I wanted to happen next. What did you think about the last chapter? And when you're done reading, tell me; whatcha think of this one?
I heard a slight groan to my left, and that's what woke me up. I slowly opened my eyes one by one.
I hear someone laughing, and then, "Minho your a bloody pain in the arse."
It was Minho laughing and Newt talking. I sat up, and turned on my butt to face them. Newt was right next to me, leaning back on his elbows, squinting, eyes not adjusted to the morning sunlight.
Had I fallen asleep next to him?
Probably. After that horrible dream- message thing."What're you looking at?" I ask at a smirking Minho.
"Oh, nothing, nothing at all. Just kinda fascinated me to find my fellow love birds so close," Minho says with a grin.
I feel the blood rushing to my cheeks and look at the ground.
It's not like that! I just wanted him to comfort me after that dream, and we fell asleep! I wanted to scream at Minho, but I know any attempt at an excuse will only make me look more pathetic.
Wait... Did I really want Newt to comfort me? Did I like him as more than a friend?... Oh what are you talking about you idiot, you guys are friends. He doesn't even like you like that, stupid. My mind argued with itself as my eyes watched Minho continue to tease Newt.
Then a more important thought popped into my head, I'm leaving in two weeks. I have to or... I know that if I think about the "consequences" presented to me last night, I'll freak out again. I clear my mind and tell myself everything is going to work out as long as I follow through with it.
"Hello? Can't you hear this?" Minho says and waves a hand in front of my face.
I jump out of my thoughts, quite literally.
"Wh-What?" I stutter.
"I said that you should be a runner." Minho says matter-o-factly.
I look at Newt, who is worriedly staring at the maze walls.
"Yeah, whatever," I say and look away. I hate to be like this, but I don't have time to mess with being a runner. Especially if it makes Newt uneasy. It's going to be hard enough for him to hear I'm sending myself back to the people who created this hell hole.
"Excuse me? I don't think I heard you right; please don't tell me that you just said whatever to being a runner. Please," Minho says, not really believing my attitude.
"You heard me. I don't care about being a runner," I say.
"Yeah well it seemed like you cared yesterday!" Minho yells, barely letting me finish.
He doesn't understand, he doesn't know. I can't be mad at him but I also can't tell him.
"Listen, Minho. I can't do it, okay? I can't be a runner."
"Fine, Eve. You still have to try out your other jobs, but I just want to remind you that it's not really your choice," and with that he jogs away. I wish he didn't get so offended over stupid things.
I let out an annoyed breath of air and crash back onto my back.
After a minute of silence Newt finally says, "What did you mean last night? What happened?"
I waited a moment, debating whether or not to tell the truth, "I had a bad dream. You know how-"
I stop myself from telling him about the message. If I tell him, he'll try to hold me back. If I don't tell him, he'll hate me when I leave.
"How what?" He asks and scoots next to me. I lay on my back, with my feet close to my butt, knees in the air. Newt sits criss-crossed next to me, knees touching my side. His big, brown eyes looking down at me.
"You know how I have to go back?" I say. I can feel the tears coming.
At first, he was confused. But then it hit him. "No... No, you don't have to. You can't."
"Yes Newt, I can. WICKED's going to send the box up at midnight when we get our supplies two weeks from now. I'll have to go that way," I say.
"I won't let you! Why would you want to? Why would you want to leave me he-" I cut him off.
"Consequences," I say and sit up, causing our faces to be less than a foot apart.
"What are you talking about?" he asks, voice weakening from worry and disappointment.
"Remember how I said that you 'were dead'? Remember when I went nuts and tackled you, and screamed, and cried? Remember that?"
He nods.
"Yeah, well guess what? You weren't dead. But unless I go through that box, you will be-"
Newt quickly puts a hand behind my head and crashes his lips onto mine. He's kissing me. I don't know what to do, I don't know if I want him to be doing this. His lips are surprisingly soft. And his touch warms me.
He suddenly pulls away and I open my eyes, not even noticing that I had closed them. The warmth leaves too.
"I'm sorry, but I had to do that at least once," he says. He gets up and leaves me there, with a cold tear falling down my cheek.
