The three boys and I put some of our sheets over our heads and faces. We all looked like Muslim women.

After a few jokes on our appearance, I held the door as they climbed up and out. Eventually I followed them, ignoring what Minho said about me staying below, keeping the door cracked.

I climbed out, holding my sheet under my chin. It seemed to take ten minutes for my eyes to adjust, but eventually they did.

It was so bright. It was hot and dry. Not humid, dry. When the wind blew, it felt like a hair blow-dryer in your face. The sheets did absolutely nothing. The sun burned my skin, and the dusty air seemed to choke me.

"Eve! You were supposed to keep the door cracked for the others!" Minho scolded.

I tried to say something back, but had a coughing fit instead.

Newt walked up to me and put a hand on my back, "You alright?"

I put a hand on his shoulder, "Yes, I'm fine."

"The rest of you shanks okay?" Minho asked.

"I think we just arrived in bloody hell. Always thought you'd end up here, Minho, but not me," Newt said and I couldn't help but smile a big toothy grin.

"Good that," Minho said, "My eyeballs hurt, but I think I'm finally starting to get used to the light."

I nodded in agreement.

"So, where are we gonna have to go? How far?" Thomas asked.

I took in the place. It was almost devastating. All desert, no plant or animal life, all sand. There was a few buildings out in the distance, and mountains behind that. We probably had to cross the mountains to get one hundred miles, and by the location of the setting sun, the little town and mountain range were North.

"We have to cross the mountains," I stated simply.

"How do you know? You can measure distance and direction with your eyes? " Newt asked.

"Look, that town is probably about 35 miles away. The mountains maybe 70 or 80. And the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, correct? Well look," I pointed at the sun and Newt looked, "If the sun is setting to our left, then North is right in front of us."

"Bloody hell," Newt said. I had outsmarted him. Big time.

"You sure?" Thomas asked.

"She's right. I know distance, I'm a runner. You get a sort of feel for that stuff in the maze," Minho supported me.

"Good that," Thomas said, "lets get the others up here."
