The Hebrew word for redeemer is: GA' AL.Definition of Redeemer: a person who redeems.
Definition of Redeem:
-to buy back, get back, or win back
-to free from what distresses or harms
-to free from captivity by payment of ransom
-to extricate from or help to overcome something detrimental
-to release from blame or debt
-to free from the consequences of sin to buy back or ransom. That gives the word a whole new depth! The word was used several places in old Hebrew Bible but today I specifically want to talk about the book of Ruth. Back in the day, when Ruth was alive, if your husband died and you had no sons, it's not like she could just go out and get a job. She couldn't even own the land they lived on. Women didn't really have a voice at the time. So they had to go find the nearest male relative to take them under their wing and speak/provide for them because women didn't have a voice. Ruth was a widow traveling with her mother in law. The husband had died and there were no other sons. It was either beg and starve or be forced into something terrible like slavery/prostitution.
Enter Boaz, their redeemer. Not only did he take them under his wing, but he provided extra for them. He kept them from being homeless, he kept them from starving, bought the land so the women could keep it in their name, and gave them a place in the family to be proud of.
Several places in the Bible it talks about how God is OUR redeemer. He buys us back and takes us under His wing. See:
Ephesians 1:7
In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His graceMark 10:45
"For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many."Isaiah 44:22
I have swept away your offenses like a cloud, your sins like the morning mist. Return to me, for I have redeemed you.Acts 3:19
Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the LordAs Boaz redeemed Ruth, how much more does God redeem us?
My prayer today is that we realize what a gift God is offering, that we turn back to Him and let Him redeem us. And that we take this gift and use it to bless others. The payment has been made, Jesus already died on the cross. It's our choice to accept or not.
