Annabeth POV

I had a brother.

Weird huh. How I already have two annoying brothers but an older one like a mystery. It sounded like a cliche movie with the medallion and all of it finding each other.

The first thing I did after Malcom went into the operating room under four hours of careful surgery to remove the bullet without shattering his kneecap I had to make some phone calls.

The first was to my biological mother. I called the number to her work because I threw the one she gave me in the garbage.

The call went straight to voicemail, which I suspected it would do.

"Athena, its me. Your daughter. Just informing you that there was a small shooting involving me and my....brother Malcom. No worries, just saying that we're fine and your precious books aren't ruined. Your carpet may have some blood on it, but whatever! Oh and thanks for telling me I had a brother. Its so nice to be oblivious. Toodles!"

The whole message was one giant sarcastic remark. But who cares, I might loose my job and a chance to get a bunch of money, but that dosn't matter at the moment. I was simply angry at being oblivious.

After I messaged Athena I managed to get hold of my father. We talked every weekend catching up because Helen was out at work and we both knew she hated my guts.

He knew I had a boyfriend and I told him who Athena was, my mom. He wan't surprised. But he told me it was nice to have closure.

"Dad," I sad into the phone once he picked it up.

"No Beth." A grubly ten year old answered the phone. Mat.

"Matthew bring this to dad and don't call me Beth." I tried to not scream at my little brother.

"Fine, but he know's about the shooting. He tried to call you earlier and when you didn't pick up....things got nasty between him and mom." He sounded nervous, like he was checking around to see if they where listening.

"What happened?" I was curious. I could almost hear my little brother sweating.

"Well right before the shooting she found out about all the calls he places every weekend and thought he was having an affair. And to be honest dad has been acting strange lately. Standing up to mom and really really caring. Yesterday I saw him looking at a picture of you before he married mom." He explained carefully. But it wasn't all of it. I could tell. The dad shaped hole in my heart was healing and I think it was healing even faster.

"Gods, I can't believe they got into a fight over me." I said shocked into the phone. Again I could almost hear my little brother nodding.

"It was just me in the house, Bobby was at Marks and they thought I fell asleep. But I listened at the top of the stairs." He cleared his throat. "She was yelling at dad for cheating on her and he showed her all the calls and everything and once she found out he was calling you she got pissed." I almost dropped the phone. Mathew is smart and careful. Never says words Helen doesn't like.

"It was huge and nasty, she was angry that he was contacting his only daughter and starting to care. She didn't want you to be apart of our lives. So he got angry and told her that he wasn't a good father to you and she was brainwashing him to neglect you. And she told him that we where his real family and you..." Mat's voice started to crack. "A mistake. One he made when he was a stupid idiot. And when he told her about who your mom really was, she got super angry and stormed out." He finished.

"oh my gods, Matthew I'm so sorry you had to listen." I said sounded empathetic.

"I agree with dad though and when I said that he gave me a half full tub of ice-cream and told it would be our secret." He explained.

I almost laughed.

"I love you Mat, can you hand the phone to dad?" I asked and he replied with a dry yes. I hear footsteps and the phone being handed off to dad.

"Annabeth! Are you okay? Did Luke hurt you?" He said so fast I was still stuck on my name.

"Dad, dad, I'm fine. Just a bruise on my wrist. My...br-co-worker saved me. Thats what got the attention of the police, took a bullet to the leg." I almost cried when I said bullet. Malcom was the real hero in this situation. And Percy. He was what made me pul through.

"Gods, I want to be right there with you. I would suspect your brother told you about the fight?" His last sentence was soft like if he wasn't careful it might break.

"Yeah and dad?" I said.

"yes?"

"My co-worker, he is...he's my half brother. I'm not Athena's only child."

"No WAY!" he exclaimed and I could tell he was happy.

"Yeah and he's in surgery, but he'll be fine>" I said half-heartedly. I just wanted my new-found brother to not slip from my grasp.

"I'm coming out with the boys to see you. i've been thinking and I'm divorcing your stepmom." He declared. At first when he said step-mom I was even more shocked that the two thing before that.

He alway made me call her 'mom'. Hated that forever. But now...things where gonna change, for the better and the good.

"I'll see you then dad....and congratulations. Its time you have a break and be with the boys and me." I finally said the words I've wanted to say since 6th grade.

"I'll be there,"

I walked back to the door of the operating room. I caught a glimpse of Malcom and three doctors performing surgery, blood dripping onto the floor but the doctors looked confident and proud.

Later when Malcom was out and in the main room, I fell asleep on his side, my head nestled in the crook of his hand.

At one point I thought I hear Percy talking to Malcom and I lit up inside, but I feel back into a long sleep, dreaming of my new family, one that was sure to include Percy, Malcom, my brothers and my father. My friends and everyone I loved.

I just wished it would come true.

And maybe in a small way, it did.
