Age 5 (kindergarten)-

Lupe walks into the classroom holding her mom's hand. "Mommy, do I have to go?" She asks, looking up at her mom.

"Yes, you do, baby," her mom says in a sad voice. Then she kneels down to her height. "Don't worry. It'll be over before you know it."

Lupe pouts at her mom. "But I don't wanna go yet!" She exclaims, tears brimming her eyes.

"I know, but I'll see you soon, okay?" her mom tells her.

Lupe reluctantly nods at her, still pouting.

"I love you," her mom says, kissing her cheek before getting up to leave to go to work.

Lupe watched her mom walk away, feeling sad again. Until she hears a boy's voice. "Hey, are you okay?" the boy asks.

Lupe looks towards the boy. "My mommy had to go, and I didn't want her, too," she tells him.

"That's okay," He says. "My mom had to go, too, but she'll be back. Yours will, too."

"Really?" She asks, feeling excited.

"Yeah," He says. I'm Cody. What's your name?"

"I'm Lupe," she replies.

"Wanna be friends?"

"Yeah!"

And thus, began a beautiful friendship.

Age 10-

Lupe and Cody are now in the 5th grade. Cody plays little league baseball, while Lupe plays basketball. They would go goes each other's game pretty much every week to cheer each other on.

Today, Lupe has a basketball game, and Cody is trying to convince his parents to let him go. "Come on, can I please go?" He begs his parents.

His mom, Jennifer, pretends to think about it. "Lemme think. Mmm... no," she says.

Cody whines. "But I finished my homework," He bargains.

His dad then thinks about it. "I mean, it is his best friend," he says.

His mom sighs and looks at Cody. "You finished your homework?"

"Yes, ma'am."

"Cleaned your room?"

He nods. "Yes, ma'am."

She nods. "Alright, you can go."

His eyes light up. "Really?" His parents nod at him. "Thank you!" He runs outside to get on his bike and rides out to the community center.

Cody makes it to the center, and goes to the basketball court. He spots Lupe. "Lupe!" He yells, getting her attention. Lucky for him, the game doesn't start for another 10 min, and the girls were just warming up.

Lupe turns her head towards the voice and sees her best friend waving to get her attention. She smiles and runs over to him. "You actually made it," she says.

"Come on, you know I always go to your games," he says, playfully shoving her arm.

Lupe giggles at him. Then the whistle blows, signaling that the game is about to start. "Well, I gotta get back on the court. Game time," she says.

Cody nods at her and does their secret handshake and says "Good luck."

With that, Lupe jogs over to the court for tip off.
