You wondered why it was so confusing for you to wrap your head around. The concept was astounding in your eyes... How could one person be someone completely different in reality, when they're physically in front of you?

It shocked you to realize that people differ. People have different attitudes and opinions. People have different ways of leading their life and you questioned 'why?'.

He was lovely to talk to. You'd talk to him everyday, whether it was through a text message or verbally on the phone. You'd find yourself talking to him for hours on end, forgetting your daily chores and tasks and beating yourself for being so carried away with conversation.

Randomness was the center of the conversation most of the time. You'd let the words lead you down whatever path they would.

He was full of wisdom and direction, you admired that about him. He would make you question your life and help you steer you the right way, he genuinely cared for your well-being and you loved him for that.

But James... he was different in real life.

You have known each other for years, but it seems like you're just friends on the internet.

You've met up with each other at countless college parties, neighborhood gatherings and even events held by common friends, but every time you meet... it's disappointing. You'd always want to continue the topic of discussion that he had brought up through a message or a phone call, but he always seemed distant. He seemed like he wanted nothing to do with you in public life.

You even met once separately in hopes to catch up but it was the most awkward evening you have been through in your life. You never met up, just the two of you, ever again.

It's not like you have a crush on him, it's not like you want anything to do with affection with him but... you certainly felt that there was some sort of chemistry present. For a long time, you lived under a rock, blind to the reality that there actually was nothing but time pass between the two of you.

'Texting with benefits'.

But everything changed one day at a local book fair. You saw him by the fiction section, running his fingers along the spines of sorted books and searching for one that could possibly be of interest to him.

You never knew he liked to read. You took it as an opportunity for a conversation opener.

"I've heard 'The Bridge of NeverEnd' is something worth reading," You said as you approached him, holding the novel by one of your liked authors out to him.

James raised his eyebrows and smiled, "Hey [y/n]!" He followed his greeting with an unexpected hug that surely caught you off guard. You hesitantly hugged him back and then smiled nervously.

"So what are you doing here? I didn't think you were fond of books," James commented and you scoffed in your mind. You wanted to reply with a witty remark but decided not to.

To your astonishment, a dialogue between both of you commenced and it was actually quite intriguing, and almost close to the level on a text message conversation.

You enjoyed yourself. You wished that it would never end.

You and James drifted to a local diner, and sat inside for hours, talking and catching up. It was exactly like how you imagined being close to him would be like.

And as if all your dreams were coming true one by one, progress was made step by step.

You found yourself falling in love with James for real, and now it was clear that both of you had feelings for each other romantically, outside the realm of texting and talking on the phone.

You dated him for a couple of years before he realized that he wanted something more. He sealed your names together with a ring on your finger and a wedding ceremony eventually.

You were soon blessed with a baby boy and James finally let you adopt a puppy of your favorite dog breed, that you named [y/d/n].

You were happy and content. You wouldn't change anything in your life. You wouldn't change the fact that you went through all that confusion years ago about why he acted so oddly with you in person.

Was it your perception of him? Was there something you said or did wrong?

You never asked him, you didn't really want to know anymore. It was in the past and all you can think about now is how great your life turned out.

But none of that ever happened. It was all a figment of imagination in your mind.

You still stand in the middle of the book fair, 'The Bridge to NeverEnd' held close to your chest as you stared at James while he ran his fingers across the spines of books sorted out on the shelf. He was clearly searching for something interesting to read.

You never knew he liked reading... He never mentioned it.

Reflecting on your thoughts, how important was he to you? Was it all worth it?

You didn't think so... and you walked away to the section for biographies.

James glanced to his right, towards the entrance of the aisle. He had an eerie feeling that someone was standing there moments ago.

After seeing that no one was present, he shrugged his shoulders and continued his search for a perfect night time read.
