James knew that he was going to be in deep shit with a fine... or multiple and that you would personally give him a beating for it, but it didn't matter to him right now.

He was terribly late and the pressure of that was eating his insides.

He served around a car in the fast lane, overtaking it and gripping the steering wheel until his knuckles turned white. James would usually turn on the radio for some background ambience but this time around, it's silent. The only sound that could be heard was the roaring of the car's engine, the screeching tires and his own heavy breathing.

He stopped outside the hospital, parking the car in the first vacant spot he saw then raced out towards the main sliding doors.

He stopped suddenly when he realised that he forgot the flowers in the passenger seat. James jogged back, took the bouquet of flowers that had a greeting card hanging around it then stepped into the hospital.

He ran a hand through his hair to neaten it then smiled at the receptionist. "Hi I'm here to see my wife, room 117," He informed and the receptionist nodded her head.

"Your name sir?"

He raised an eyebrow. She had seen him over here before, he was sure of it. "James," He told, matter-of-factly, "McAvoy. And my wife's is [y/n], the same surname."

She searched the patient and visitor database for the appropriate entries as James drummed his fingers on the reception desk surface. He glanced around, looking for if room 117 was in view.

"Sir, please wait one moment. I have to check with my supervisor," She told and got up, while James stared at her with shock.

"Wait wait wait, what? Why?!" He exclaimed in a rush, "I can't wait a moment, I'm here to see my wife who was in labour!"

James clenched his jaw then started to walk down the left corridor, but a security guard stopped him. "Let me through," He said sternly and the guard shook his head.

"Sorry sir, authorised visitors only," He responded flatly, making James boil with frustration.

"I am authorised! My wife's in there!" He started to push the man aside and shove past him but his feet were firmly planted on the ground.

James started to argue, his sanity toppling off the edge into a pit of rage. A couple of more guards were called as a commotion was about to erupt. People around the main room looked ag him with annoyance and surprise-

"James!" He turned back and found a middle-aged man walking towards him, wearing a white doctor's coat and a clipboard in his hands.

"Hey Doctor Johnson, help," James requested and the doctor nodded at the security guard.

"Let this man through," He commanded with a gesture, "This man's wife has just had a baby."

The guard stepped away and stood back in his spot beside the doors. James followed the doctor down the hallway after glancing at everyone in the room.

He took a deep breath. The fact that the doctor just announced about the baby reminded him of how treasured this moment is and how his life would never be the same in a few minutes.

James jogged up to the doctor and brisk-walked beside him. They stepped into an elevator and went one floor up.

James stared at the floor, running his hands furiously and biting his lips. The doctor squeezed his shoulder and smiled, "Relax James! Your wife's okay, the baby's healthy and everything was uneventful."

He nodded his head but still... the words couldn't comfort him as much as he wanted.

TING!

The elevator doors slid open and the doctor stepped out, followed by James. As they walked down another corridor with rooms on each side. James looked at the labels on the doors for '117'. The doctor stopped outside a room next to the waiting area and knocked on the door. A moment late he opened it slowly and stepped inside.

James gulped then entered the room as well. He saw you laying on the hospital bed, and you parents seated on a sofa at the far end wall. You were talking about something to your mother but once you saw James you smiled widely.

"Hello love," He greeted and walked over to you, planting a kiss on your lips then on your head. The doctor smiled and exited the room.

James then walked over to your parents and hugged them. He looked over to the cot parked next to your bed and took in a sharp breath.

"Now I should meet the star of the show," He chuckled and approached the cot slowly. As soon as he caught a glimpse of the baby laying inside, he felt tears glisten his eyes.

A small, delicate and unblemished baby girl was sound asleep, her chest moving up and down ever-so-slightly. He bent down to pick her up then stopped, not wanting to wake her. "Go on James, it's alright," You said with a smiled and he gently picked her up and held her in his arms, watching every single feature on her face.

She yawned softly and James looked at her with awe. He planted a small kiss on her forehead then rocked her slowly as she gradually woke up.

Your parents stood up from their seats then walked over to the door. "We're going to have some lunch dear, we'll come back in a couple of hours," Your father informed, "Do the two of you need anything?"

"No, I think we're fine. Thanks, Dad," You replied and smiled.

It was only you and James... and your baby girl, in the room. James took a seat on the bed beside your torso, still watching his daughter with fascination. "Isn't she beautiful?" James commented, a teardrop rolling down his cheek.

You sat up straight and wiped the tear with your thumb. "Look at her... She's so innocent, untouched by the world, unaware about what life is," You added.

James sighed, "Look honey, I'm sorry I wasn't here on time. I came as fast as I could and I still couldn't make it on-"

You placed your hand over his mouth and shook your head. "Hey, you don't have to apologise for anything okay? It's a call of nature, she wasn't even supposed to come today," You explained, "You were away for work in the next city hours away. You're here now and that's what matters."

You kissed him passionately and he pulled away with a nervous face. "[y/n/n], I-I may have got a couple of speeding fines," He confessed with dread and you gasped, slapping his arm. You were about to scold him about it but your attention was grabbed by the fact that your daughter's eyes had finally opened up, and she looked around with surprise.

"Aw, she's got your eyes James!" You said excitedly as two blue orbs watched you and James intently, trying to make out who you were from your voices.

James brought her closer to your faces, "Hi sweetheart, it's your mummy and daddy." She smiled, as an uncontrollable reflex, but it made both of you beam with happiness.

"You know there was such a commotion in the main lobby. They weren't letting me in for some reason and I got so frustrated," James laughed then glanced at you.

He was going to continue the story but he saw that you were fast asleep. He placed his daughter back in her cot then walked over to you and draped the blanket over you. He kissed your forehead then stepped out of the room, and towards the cafeteria, realising that he didn't have anything to eat since last night.
