I've always felt nervous about flying. I've never really expressed it to anyone... I never really found the right opportunity or justification too. And the irony is that I fly constantly for my job."Sir, your seat," The air hostess gestured to the seat beside her with a smile and James nodded his head and placed his hand-carry luggage in the overhead compartment. It was a rather small plane that was almost filled to maximum capacity with passengers, but it did not help with the anxiety of flight that settled inside James' gut.
He took a breath before taking his seat that happened to have a window beside it.
Great. Exactly what I need right now, He thought.
James shut the window by sliding the shade down then rested his head back on the head cushion. He closed his eyes slowly and-
BUZZZZZZ!
The phone vibrating in his back pocket startled him and he furrowed his eyebrows. Someone was calling him, he had forgotten to put his phone on flight mode.
He took his phone out from his pocket then looked at the lit-up screen that had the caller ID of 'Honey Cake', indicating that his wife was giving him a call.
He immediately answered the call and placed the phone against his ear.
"Hey, sweetie!" You greeted, "Did you board the plane yet?"
"Y-Yeah I'm sitting inside right now, waiting for take-off," James said with a monotone. The sound of your voice calmed his nerves slightly.
"Alright, great. I just called to check on-" Your voice lowered in volume as you turned your head away from the phone to check on your 8-month old daughter, "What's wrong baby?"
After the sounds of rustling clothes and static follow, you put the phone back to your ear and call out to see if James is still on the call.
"So how long-Baby, I'm talking to daddy okay?" You told your daughter, who was now sitting on your lap and chewing on a teether. She started to fuss and you rolled your eyes. You put the phone call on speaker then let her hold the phone.
"Hello... love?" James raised an eyebrow.
"Dada?" Your daughter spoke into the phone, bringing it close to her ear and being mesmerised by the light being emitted from the screen.
"Hello sweetheart, how are you doing?" James greeted with a smile spreading across his face. The sound of his daughter immediately brightened his mood.
"Fyy..." She mumbled then looked at you.
"Yes I'm flying in a big plane [y/d/n]! I'll see all the small sheep-"
"Heep?" She questioned with excitement and James laughed.
"So many 'heep'," He said then took a breath.
"You know honey, I spotted her second tooth peeking out of her gums today in the morning when I fed her," You told and he raised his eyebrows.
"Really?"
"Yeah! It's one on the bottom and she's going through a world of pain and gnawing on anything she can find-" You attempted to get your phone back from your daughter's hold right before she was about to put it in her mouth.
She screamed out and started to grow restless as she tried to wriggle out of your lap.
"Oh my lord [y/d/n]!" You exclaimed then placed your phone on the couch. You carried her over to her playpen and placed her down to distract her with some toys so that you could talk to your husband. She protested in the beginning but then got herself occupied with her toy guitar that blared out nursery rhyme music. You sighed then walked back to the couch.
"I presume you'll want the back-up to reach as soon as possible?" James asked and you chuckled.
"Please, all I've been thinking about for the past few days is you.. and you coming back and helping me get some sleep," You told and he smirked.
"And that's all you want me back for?"
You laid down on the couch and laughed, "What are you implying James?"
"Nothing [y/n/n]... nothing at all. I just thought I'd plant a seed of an idea in your mind," He continued on the topic and you pursed your lips.
"Alright sure, whatever you say," You grinned and turned to your side, the phone pressed to your ear as you stared at the ground, listening to the subtle sound of the aeroplane engine running in the background and James' heavy breathing.
You frowned, "You okay?"
"Yeah... why?"
"Nothing, you just... You seem tense," You pointed out and he rubbed his forehead.
"I don't like flying. I don't fancy the experience, that's all," He answered flatly and you sat up on the couch.
"What really? How come I never knew this?" You furrowed your eyebrows with confusion, "We've known each other for seven years... How-"
"I just didn't find it that important. The topic never came up," James shrugged his shoulders then started fidgeting with the seat belt.
A silence fell over the conversation... You felt awkward all of a sudden. You didn't know your husband as well as you had thought and-
"But you calling has made me feel so much better. I'm so glad I'm talking to you before the plane takes off," James expressed with a shaky tone, "I-I love you both s-so very much and I can't wait to be home."
You smiled softly, "We love you too Daddy."
"You know I actually have something-"
"I'm sorry sir but we will be taking off shortly. Kindly keep your devices on flight mode," The air hostess informed with a smile and James nodded his head.
"Sorry love, I have to go now," He said quickly, "I'll talk to you as soon as I pass through customs."
"Don't worry, we'll be here waiting for you," You said and smiled.
"Love you, bye," James said, "Kisses to [y/d/n]!"
He ended the call then put his phone on flight mode. He placed it back in his pocket then gathered his nerves and burried them down so he could put himself in a good mood to meet his family.
