Richie woke up sweating.
"Bad nightmare, bad nightmare," he chanted in his head as the image of the thing that attacked him. "It wasn't real, you're sick and in bed. Get up, Richie. You need to check on mom."
Richie blinked and sat up, and reality came crashing down on him. He wasn't scared, but he was confused and his head was filled with sleep. The room he was in still had a red glow, and Bev was stirring next to him.
"So it wasn't a dream," Richie said aloud, sitting up weakly. The scent of lavender and raw meat hit him at the same time, making him crinkle his nose.
He was resting in front of the bed in the room, so he leaned back against it, trying to wake up and figure out his surroundings. Bev groaned and opened her eyes, before she started to panic when she saw where she was.
"Calm down, it's okay," Richie said, helping her sit up.
Both were disoriented and trying to figure out what had happened. They weren't restrained but both were finding it difficult to stand and move. The sound of metal clinking drew their attention away from trying to stand. They looked toward the sound and saw a small figure settled on top of the metal bar in the room.
"Look," Bev whispered, pointing at a metal chain that was trailing from the figure's leg to the ground.
The figure didn't seem to have noticed them waking up. It was hard to see what it was, but it wasn't facing them. It was leaned against the wall, and there was a black sheet like material around it.
"What is it?" Bev asked, breathing shakily and trying to scramble away.
"Shh," Richie hissed. "I think it's asleep. We need to get out of here."
"So you're done exploring?" Bev snapped, trying to quietly stand.
Richie glared at her but stood up anyway. He faced the door, constantly glancing at the figure to make sure it didn't wake up. He took one careful step and heard a loud crinkling sound. Richie's eyes widened as he looked down, seeing there were plastic bags all over.
The figure turned, having been unexpectedly woken up. It saw Richie and Bev standing behind him before leaping off the bar.
"Those weren't sheets," Richie whispered, feeling afraid for the first time since entering the house.
The figure landed in front of him, eyes narrowed in hatred. What Richie and Bev thought were sheets covering it turned out to be large, black, leathery wings. Its eyes were red and, despite how short it was, Richie was terrified he'd only have a few more moments to live.
Bev pulled Richie back and they tumbled to the ground with the creature walking closer to them. It was breathing slowly and timidly. It almost seemed afraid, as if it was trying to act stronger than it really was. It got closer, and as it was about to dive at Richie, it fell to the ground, growling in pain.
Richie pushed Bev back so they were as far from the creature as possible. Bev grabbed the red sheet that covered the light and pulled it off so a brighter glow casted itself through the room.
They saw the creature on the ground, wailing and hissing, trying to stand. The chain secured around its leg and it had tangled around both of its legs, making it hard for the creature to try to stand. It continued to pull at the binds, its wings flapping and pulling urgently.
