No one spoke for the rest of the drive. Avi knew where she was going, and neither Richie or Eddie wanted to upset her more than she already was. They could tell that even though Kali had just played with their minds that it was really bothering the enchantress.
She kept whispering to herself and biting the inside of her cheek anxiously. It was almost as if she was fighting an inner battle and trying not to lose it.
"Is she going to be okay?" Eddie whispered to Richie, who was laying against the door to the car.
"Not sure, but she reminds me more of you now," Richie said with a wink.
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"She's moody and pissy, and she's really got the resting bitch face down," Richie said with a snicker, causing Eddie to giggle too.
"I can hear you two, you know?" Avi snapped from the front, turning to glare at the two.
"What're you gonna do about it?" Eddie asked, smirking at the girl, who looked increasingly more annoyed.
"Fucking idiots," she whispered under her breath, making Richie and Eddie laugh more, knowing she wasn't going to do anything to stop them.
After their laughter died down, Richie decided to ask Avi questions that he wanted answered, knowing that despite her negative attitude, she'd probably answer them. The silent treatment didn't seem to be her style.
"How'd you meet that girl? Kali?" Richie asked, and he saw Avi almost wince at the name.
"She and I helped save a town in Indiana. There was another girl there with powers and they needed help battling some monsters from another dimension. I had a vision of it and met Kali on the way. I really thought I could rely on her, too, but it seems to me that all she's interested in is getting stronger," Avi said, brushing some of her hair out of her face. "You still have that demon, right?"
Eddie nodded, holding up the necklace with the black soul inside, still fighting to get out.
"You said those three women were your sisters," Richie said, continuing his personal investigation of Avi.
"Yeah, I did. What of it?"
"Well, what happened to them?"
Avi sighed. "They weren't my biological sisters, but we all grew up together. That must've been, what, thirty years ago?"
"You don't look a day over seventeen," Eddie said, surprised that the girl driving could be even close to her thirties.
"Yeah, I can choose my age once I hit adulthood. Enchantresses live for thousands of years, much like demons. So, yes, I look like I'm seventeen, and I will for the next hundred years, most likely, until I choose I want to get older. Anyway, back to the women I called my sisters. We all grew up together in an orphanage type place. I went there when I was twelve, after my mother died. The last enchantress before me had died a few years before she did, so I went to the care home. Had he been alive, I would've gone to him for training, but I got stuck at the care home. I was able to hide my abilities, but one day I got upset and accidentally blew out a window. My three friends, they covered for me."
Avi paused and turned to look at the boys, who seemed very fascinated by her story, which made her smile softly. It felt good to have people around that actually wanted to listen.
"Once we got old enough, we left the care home and ended up in Derry. I was in love with one of my friends, and as time passed we got closer and ended up dating. She and I got an apartment in Derry, as did our other two friends. Then, the demons happened. It was a battle at first, one of the demons and myself being the two defending the humans. Then, in order to try to weaken us, the three most powerful demons took over my friends. Well, my two friends and my girlfriend. Then..."
Avi had tears in her eyes but fought to blink them away. "I couldn't extract the demons. My containment vessels were too weak. The only way to save the people was to kill the best things that had ever happened to me, so I did it. After we did, we chased the demons back into their portal and closed it. The demon that was your father died a hero, and I left that town as soon as I could. I kept contact with Sonia in case Eddie did up being part demon, which he did, so I sent her what she needed to keep his powers under control. I didn't think I'd ever have to return, but here we are."
Richie and Eddie sat in silence, not knowing what to say. Richie understood the weight of a loss, and Eddie could feel her sorrow and guilt, so he could try to understand.
"For what it's worth, I think you made the right choice," Eddie said, which surprised Richie and Avi alike.
To them, Eddie seemed like the last person to want to speak. Especially since he seemed to hate Avi and tried to fight her on their first interaction.
"Thanks, Eddie," Avi said with a soft smile. "Your dad was a good person. Demon-person. He helped me pay for my first apartment and looked out for me. It seems like you got some of his traits."
"Which ones?" Eddie was eager to know more about his father. Especially if a demon hater like Aviana said he was a good man.
"Well, the being part demon is a definite passed on trait." Avi turned and smirked at Eddie, who rolled his eyes. "You look like him, and you're a good person. It's the demon soul that makes you short tempered, but I can tell you're a good one."
Eddie smiled at her. "Can you tell me about him?"
Avi was about to respond, but was cut off by a burning tree crashing in front of their car. A demon landed on top of the burning tree, and Avi quickly grabbed a containment unit and ordered Eddie to get ready to fight.
The demon saw them and snarled, but didn't attack. Instead, it spread its wings and took off toward the town.
"Welcome back to Derry," Richie said, watching as Avi and Eddie worked together to move the tree.
