It felt like an eternity. Mason’s breathing was struggling and I knew he was holding back tears. I was too. We missed each other. Obviously we had both been dealing with losing each other in different ways. I had been partying and as far as I knew, Mason had started to drink even more. I began to feel uncomfortable and pulled away as I sniffled once more. I sat back down at the table and sighed. Mason sat down too.

“I want to go slow this time around. I want to try harder so you’ll stay.” Mason glued his eyes to mine and swallowed.

“I do too.” I said slowly.

“How have you been?” Mason asked. He propped his elbows up on the table and folded his hands.

“Pretty good, lately.” It was a lie but I wasn’t about to tell him the truth. To be honest, I didn’t even remember the last time I was genuinely happy. Is this the right choice? Am I just lonely? I bit down on my bottom lip as I shooed away my thoughts.

“I’ve been awful. Cali, I love you.”

“Mason,” I giggled at how serious he was. I wasn’t really used to affection.

He ran his fingers through my hair and smiled as he pressed his lips to mine. I felt secure but extraordinarily nervous. Was that a thing? Yeah, it had to be. I backed away when I felt my phone vibrating again and finally looked at it. I had seven missed calls from Justin. Aimee had texted me too.

“You all right?” Mason asked.

“Yup.” I nervously smiled down at the ground.

----

Justin was only five minutes away from Mason’s house. He tried to call Cali once again but it went straight to voicemail. As much as it seemed like Cali was the main focus of his right now, it really wasn’t. His focus was on Tamara. He mostly wanted to know why Tamara wasn’t being honest with him and why he was seeing less of her every single day. Justin guessed that it was all just in his head. He also really needed to pee.

----

Mason and I were now sitting on the couch watching a movie. Everything seemed kind of peaceful and it was a pretty awkward moment. I guess we were just trying to get back into the swing of things. Mason had gotten us both another beer and some popcorn when there was a knock at the door. I shouldn’t really say a knock, it was more like repeated pounding.

Mason looked at me confused and went over to answer the door. I was way too into the popcorn to even notice there was yelling going on until my name was called.

“So Cali is here?” I walked out of the tv room as soon as I heard my name.

Justin and Mason were standing in the entryway.
