Two days after the USJ attack we went back to school.
"Did you watch the news last night? It was so cool!"
"We're totally big deals." Everyone continues to talk about the USJ attack as if they hadn't almost died.
"You were so cool, Kyarakuta!" Kaminari says, glancing over at me. "You fought the bad guys off so easily!" I shrug, staring at my desk.
Can I really be a hero?
"ATTENTION! HOMEROOM CLASS IS ABOUT TO BEGIN! STOP TALKING AND TAKE YOUR SEATS!" Iida bursts in, yelling orders at everyone. He's met by a few comments about how he's the only one standing. This frustrates him, so he sits down angrily.
"So, who do you guys think will be teaching today?" Ashido asks, leaning back in her chair and nearly falling on Asui.
"No idea. Mr. Aizawa's still in the hospital recovering." Asui replies. As soon as the sentence leaves her lips Aizawa pushes the doors open, greeting us with a raspy voice. His vocal cords were injured, so it'll be hard for him to speak normally for a while.
"Mr. Aizawa, what are you doing here?!" The whole class yells at the same time. How do they do that?
"I'm glad you're okay!" Iida yells, probably trying to get brownie points.
"You call that okay?" Uraraka asks Iida as Aizawa walks to the front of the classroom.
"My well-being is irrelevant. What's more important is that your fight isn't over yet." Aizawa rasps, his voice weakening with every word. "The UA Sport's Festival is about to start." The students question whether holding the Sport's Festival so soon after an attack is smart, and Aizawa explains that the school is using it as a way to show that everything is fine.
He continues to give a brief history lesson about the Festival, mentioning the Olympics and how it nearly disappeared when quirks developed in humans, and how the UA Sport's Festival took its place. My classmates continue to talk about how pro heroes will be watching, but I zone out. This festival will be easy for me as long as I stay away from the more powerful quirks.
Aizawa dismisses the class, probably leaving to see Recovery Girl. Once he's gone everyone chatters about the festival, as High Schoolers do. I roll my eyes, leaving the room to go to lunch. I don't have any lunch money so I sit at my table, alone as usual. After a while, Hitoshi sits next to me, sliding a bowl of rice in front of me.
"I can't take this."
"Yes, you can." He says simply, eating his own rice. I sigh, knowing that I can't ignore my empty stomach forever.
"Thanks." He nods and we eat in silence. My rice quickly disappears, and I sit back, content. Bakugo comes to our table, sitting down across from me.
"Aww! Bakugo made friends!" I hear Kirishima yell as he walks over to sit with us.
"SHUT UP NERD!" Bakugo yells back angrily. Kaminari joins us as well. Kirishima and Kaminari talk their heads off as the rest of us sit in silence.
Once back in our own room a huge crowd of students cluster around the doors, trying to get a good look at us. It's a good idea, one that I wish I would've thought of.
"Why the heck are you all here?" Uraraka asks, loud enough for the whole group to hear. They ignore her, instead allowing Bakugo to answer.
"They're scouting out the competition, idiots. We're the class that survived a real villain attack. They want to see us with their own eyes." He walks up to the crowd, addressing them. "At least now you know what a future pro looks like. Now move it, Extras."
"You can't walk around calling people extras just because you don't know who they are!" Iida exclaims, gesturing wildly. I chuckle at the exchange. They would be considered extras in our world, so I kind of agree with Bakugo.
"So this is class 1-A?" I glance at the crowd when I recognize a very familiar voice. "I heard you guys were impressive, but you just sound like an ass." I try not to laugh at the comment, knowing that if I do Bakugo will most certainly kill me. "Is everyone in the hero course delusional, or just you? How sad to come here find a bunch of ego-maniacs. I wanted to be in the hero course, but like many others here I was forced to choose a different track. Such as life. I didn't cut it the first time around, but I have another chance. If any of us do well in the sports festival the teachers can decide to transfer us to the hero course. And they'll have to transfer people out to make room. Scouting the competition, maybe some of my peers are, but I'm here to let you know that if you don't bring your very best I'll steal your spot right from under you. Consider this a declaration of war." I stare at Shinso, proud of my friend. There's no doubt he'd be a great hero. On the other hand, he just declared war with Bakugo. That will not end well.
After school I decide to train. A while ago I found a secluded abandoned building, one that I can train in without running the risk of hurting a bystander. Since the festival is in two weeks I'm sure everyone is going to train. It's not something you want to skip over. I enter my training area, using Speedy to make sure no one wandered in. Once sure that I'm alone, I start working. Most people are probably lifting weights or something, but I have to get as many usable quirks as possible.
Shinso's quirk might be useful, but I can't really train it by myself. I have a good handle on Speedy, Phaser, and Dissolve since those are the few I've used the most lately. I guess I could work on Sparkles. Warp Gate might be helpful too. And maybe Element, who can control, you know, the elements. Okay. That's where I'll start.
"Sparkles, let's start with you."
