Chapter 17

The next morning, Ezzy got up as early as she could to go to the field to practice. She was up before anyone else and she knew that if she was caught, she’d be in trouble. Victor had made it clear at last night’s dinner that Ezzy was not to practice, but now that she was fine, why couldn’t she? She was okay. Nothing had happened. Elexa was the only one that got hurt, but what did Ezzy know? She hadn’t protected herself very well her whole life, so maybe this time it was better if she did listen to the people that actually cared for her. Even if they just cared because they wanted her to protect a whole city, at least they cared.

She was practicing martial arts with the old wooden dummy they had in the back. She was kicking its moving arms’ butt. She all of the sudden picked up a thought from inside the house.

Who the hell is that? Elias asked.

Ezzy stopped and ran inside like nothing had happened. After she shut the back door, she turned to start walking toward the stairs, but Elias was staring at her with his arms crossed.

“I’m sorry,” she said. “I just can’t...I needed to...” She sighed in defeat.

“You’re going to get hurt,” he stated.

“I know, but I needed to do it to know...reassure myself that I’m fine.”

“So? You still need to rest. I know it’s hard to not do something when the man doesn’t want you to do it.”

“Eli, I’m practicing martial arts, not doing drugs,” Ezzy laughed.

“Well, still the same concept. Besides, I won’t tell,” he said pulling her close to him. He began to kiss her passionately.

“Ummm, minty,” Ezzy said when she came back for air.

He laughed.

“You reek,” he said playfully.

“Thanks, it’s a new perfume,” Ezzy replied in the same tone.

He kissed her again and then said, “You have to go change before everyone gets up. If they do and you’re still here sweaty out of your mind, they’ll start to question you, and I can’t do anything after that.”

“Well, I’d like to do that, but...I want to do something else before I do,” she said pulling him by the arm.

“Oh yeah, what’s that?” he asked being pulled away.

Without another word, Ezzy led him up to her room and locked the door. She violently threw him on the bed and stripped him. He didn’t argue. Eventually they were both naked for the second time in a few days.

At breakfast, Ezzy and Elias were some of the first few to get there. The third one to be there was Galen. Ezzy took a deep breathe and stood up.

“Hey, Galen, can I talk to you in the library?” Ezzy asked.

“Err...sure, but...”

“We’ll get back before breakfast,” she assured him.

“Okay,” he said unsure.

They both walked to the library in silence and shut the door behind them when they entered it.
