A brown haired girl placed down that morning's paper on top of her coffee table and smiled at the cover. It spoke of a new comer on the scene of the recent kidnappings, it said that the new one solved the riddle in only two minutes, something that the police couldn't even after three months.
"Cindy!" A women's screeching voice was heard throughout the house as it yelled the girl's name. "Where are you!? I have something to say."
"Coming aunt!" She replied as she stood up and rushed out of the room and down several stairs. She made her way through many doors till she reached the living room where her aunt laid sprawled across the sofa. Her aunt wasn't thin or pretty, but she acted as if she was the best in the world.
"Cindy!" She yelled again, not noticing the girl in the doorway. "Cind- Oh!" She sat up at the sight of her niece. "There you are. Guess what!" She clapped her hands together. "I met up with an old acquaintance of mine."
"And?" Cindy asked trying to stifle the chuckle she felt in her throat. "What did you do?"
"Not what I did." Her aunt's eyebrows went up and down, a thing she did when she knew something no one else in the room did. "But what she will do."
"What will she do?" Cindy asked shacking her head at her aunt's shenanigans.
"She will get you in that school you want to get into!" Her aunt waved her hands in the air, not even caring that her shirt rose up and showed her stomach.
Cindy stood for a moment with wide eyes, her mind running here and there. No matter how many times she thought of it, she couldn't believe what her aunt was saying. She was going to be attending Ferton High? The biggest school in the county? With all the rich, smart and famous people of the world? they were shipped in by the hundreds. Some had to learn a different language, and did, just so that they could go there. it was a dream come true!
"Yup." Her aunt cracked her knuckles and grinned the broadest, brightest smile. "She's the principal of the school and we got talking about you and she said that there was an opening that she would be delighted to fill up with your enrollment."
"That's great!" Cindy felt herself bursting with excitement as she ran over to hug her aunt. "Thanks Aunt Clara!" She couldn't wait for the school year.
Or at least she couldn't, past tense. About four weeks later it was time to start school and her aunt agreed to drive her there before going to work. With all the thoughts that ran through her head Cindy didn't even realize that she was going in the wrong direction. In moments she stood outside of her aunt's car staring at a run down, beaten up building that once in it's life, might have resembled a school.
"What is this?" She asked her aunt as she pointed at the messy bricks. "I thought we were going to Ferton High? What is this?"
"Ferton High?" her aunt repeated the name. "I thought you wanted to go to Berton HIgh?" She tapped her face with her finger. "I'm sorry pumpkin." She sighed. "I always mess up when it counts."
"Berton... High?" Cindy's eye twitched at the name. She wasn't going to attend the best high school! She was attending the worst! Sure, Berton High was pretty famous too. Famous for being the school drop outs and unaccepted kids go, and that's where her aunt had set her up to go. She was being released to go into the den of evil that dare call itself a high school.
"You... Aren't mad, are you?" Her aunt asked grabbing cindy's arm. "It was an honest to goodness mistake."
Cindy looked down at her and right into the saddest looking eyes she had ever seen on her aunt. One word of hate would kill her.
"I... don't mind..." She scratched her head... "I just didn't expect this." She forced a smile and pulled her arm away from her aunt. "See you after school." She departed from the vehicle and worked her way to the door, slowly and carefully, in case something should pop out of nowhere and knock her over.
"A newbie!" someone yelled as she entered the building.
"Fresh meat!" yelled another. Cindy listened to their cheers as she walked on through.
"And a girl at it! We have so few." One ran up next to her as he yelled. "How you do newb?" He smiled brightly. "You may not have known this but let me warn you." He stopped right in front of her causing her to fallow suite. "You are putting your life on the line coming here. These guys are ruthless. Be careful." With that he walked away without another word to her.
"Thanks." She mumbled under her breath. She glanced around at all the eyes following her every move. "It's going to be a long year..." She sighed as she continued on her way.
"You don't want to be here." A disheveled boy with coal black hair spoke as she passed. "It will only get worse each day, if you last past this one, that is."
"I won't be intimidated." She glared right at him eye to eye with his light blue ones. The fierce reply shocked him a little, but he grinned and walked up to her and leaned close to her ear.
"I like you." He passed her brushing her arm. "Good luck." He waved as he left her to herself.
"I'm disliking the way this is going." She turned to the door he was leaning on, it was the one to her first class. "Well, I am going to be just fine, no need to be afraid." She took a deep breath and walked into the room to a scene she wasn't expecting.
Cindy walked over to the teacher, who was sitting at their desk with his feet up and reading a book. At her approach he looked up.
"Ah!" He brightened up. "The newb." He placed down his feet and turned to her. "I forgot about you." He opened a drawer and pulled out several papers and scanned them for a moment. "You are actually here to learn?" He asked as she looked around the room at the empty chairs, the place where students were supposed to be.
"Yes." She ran a hand through her hair and shook her head. "That's why normal people go to school. to learn." So many questions were in her head. Things like; why was she so scared when no one was even in the classroom? Why wasn't there anyone in the room? Did she need to have worries? Was it always going to be like this? She could handle it if it was.
"Go ahead and take a seat, then I'll start the lesson." He smiled as he stood. "After all these years of 'teaching' here, I might get through a whole lecture." He was so hyped about the thought that he didn't wait for her and started immediately.
As he spoke on volcanic eruption Cindy sat quietly taking notes. It wasn't long till noises were heard outside their door.
With a sigh the teacher stopped and turned to the wall dividing them and the commotion. "Three, two..." He pointed at the wall and a crash was heard as someone came flying through it and landing right in front of Cindy.
"You boys are supposed to be in your chairs listening to my words with complete concentration or boredom!" The teacher yelled angrily at the rowdy bunch.
"Oh, Shut it." One of the boys said walking through the newly made hole. "No one ever listens to your stupid explanations of dumb science."
"She is." He boasted pointing at Cindy who was still taking notes of things written in the school book that sat in front of her. The teacher smiled and clasped his hands at the sight. "You are officially my favorite, Cindy."
At her name being said she looked up at the teacher and nodded.
"She's sooooo cool." The teacher was now fan girling over his student and the others were peeved at the sudden respectful outsider.
"Hey!" The one who was on the floor sat up all bruised and beat up and stared her right in the eyes. "What do you think you're doing?" He asked placing his hand on her desk and standing up. "This is a school where you can do anything you want. You don't have to do homework or even worry about the school's reputation, cause we already have a bad one."
"I won't be part of your nonsense." Cindy said, also standing up. "If what you say is true, that I can do what I want and not worry about it, then I shall learn for that is what I want to do."
The boys stood silent and confused at the comment. Sure that is what they said but, she wanted to learn? Was she crazy?
"You really are a weird one." A familiar voice spoke and Cindy locked eyes with the disheveled boy from earlier.
"Bruno!" The boy on the floor yelled out to the brunette boy. "You're done with your nap now? We thought we weren't going to see you for the rest of the day."
"I heard there was a newb." He tilted his head. "How could I sleep through their first day?" He proceeded to walk over to the chair right next to Cindy and sit down.
"Boss..." The other boy said reaching out his hand. "Why are you sitting down? This is the classroom."
"I want to see what's so amazing about learning." He shrugged. "I figured if she likes it this much then there's got to be something about it. You guys should sit too."
The group of boys glanced at one another before taking there seats as well.
"Wow..." The teacher nodded at the filled chairs. "This is the best day of my life." He wiped the tears that were starting to form in his eyes. "I can't believe this is happening."
"Just start the lesson before I decide that I don't want to be here anymore because of your stupidity." The boss of the rascals spoke with a serious tone.
"Yes, yes." The teacher turned to the chalkboard. "I won't mess with a good thing."
"What..." Cindy turned to the boy from the floor. "Why?"
"I'm Kevin." He introduced himself with a broad grin. "What's your name newb? I mean if you don't want to tell then we can still call you 'newb' for the rest of your life till one day when we finally get-"
"CIndy." She cut him off. "Now I'm trying to pay attention."
Kevin went from her notebook she was writing in to the chalkboard as he shut his mouth and remained silent.
