"Well I feel like my brain is going to explode..." Kevin spoke at the end of the school day. "What was the point of all that? Why would I want to know things like what chemical plus what chemical makes the color green?"
"There is no reason!" The group of boys yelled as they rubbed their temples. "Such nonsense don't mean nothing to us."
"'Doesn't'" Cindy corrected and they stared at her. "'Such nonsense doesn't mean anything to you.'" She shook her head. "Obviously you guys weren't ready for this. Go back to preschool."
"Preschool!" Kevin screamed. "I hated preschool!"
Cindy glanced at him as she placed her last book in her backpack. "And I can't imagine why. It was one of the easiest times in all the twelve years you have to go through before graduation."
"Cindy!" A call came from outside of the window and everyone ran over to see who was calling. Cindy laughed as she saw her aunt Clara standing under their window waving at them. "I've come to pick you up."
"Well, that's my cue." Cindy placed her bag's strap on her shoulder and was heading out when someone grabbed her arm. She turned to see Bruno holding her tight.
"If you have any sense in you, you will listen to me right now." He had as straight face as he talked.
Confused but not wanting to fight with the seriousness of his demeanor, she nodded in compliance.
"Go out the back." Was all he uttered before letting go. She looked at the other guys as they stared at her.
"Okay..." She pulled the strap further up and strolled to the back exit and around to her aunt's car.
"Cindy!" Clara marched over to her with a frown. "Why did you come out the back? I was waiting for you in the front."
"Sorry Aunt." She opened her door and got in the car as her aunt did the same. "One of my classmates said I should go out the back with an earnest expression I couldn't help but agree to his request. I'll come out the front tomorrow."
"Alrighty." She closed her door and turned on the car then looked over to her niece with a facial appearance of utmost importance.
"What is it?" Cindy asked as she, also became serious. "Is it another summon?" a click sounded as she buckled.
"Yes." Clara reached to the back seats and grabbed a manilla file and handed it over to Cindy. "Be careful. I don't want anything to happen to you."
"Nothing is going to happen." Cindy tried to calm her worrying aunt with her words as she looked over the papers in the file. "Nothing has or ever will."
"I know..." Her aunt patted Cindy's head. "I just worry about you so much. I don't want what happened to your parents to happen to you."
"It won't." Cindy glared out the window as Clara started to drive. "I will never let that happen."
The drive home was quiet and the atmosphere was thick as they both thought about what the papers said.
As soon as they reached the house Cindy ran to her room, leaving her aunt in the car to wait, and placed her school bag on the bed. She looked at the mirror and lifted her hand above her head, clenching it into a fist she dropped it and her appearance quickly changed. Her hair that was brown and wavy only a moment ago, now was golden and straight and her eyes went from their hazel to a dark, blood red.
After the transformation she quickly changed her clothes to black knee-high boots, black jeans and a long-sleeve navy blue shirt that sat lower than normal, going down half-way to her knees.
Now, completely ready, she headed down the stairs and out the door to her aunt's car. Opening the door once again to enter and head off to do her job.
"Oh..." Clara glanced into her niece's eyes for a second. "That red always..." Cindy's heart started to pound as her aunt trailed.
"What?" Cindy lightly placed her hand on her aunt's. "What is it?"
Clara had a sad smile as she placed her hands on Cindy's face. "Makes me think you have swollen eyes. I always feel so bad about the pain they must give."
Cindy blinked her eyes a bit before sighing and letting go of her aunt. "Don't scare me like that. I thought... Never mind."
"Cindy," Now it was Clara's turn to grabbed the other's arm. "I wan't you to do me a favor and never," She shook her head furiously. "Never, believe anything people tell you just because they say it."
"Of course." Cindy chuckled. "That's our motto right? 'Trust is something earned not given.'" She smiled waving her hand indicating complete understanding. "No worries in that department. I don't and won't easily trust anyone, never."
