twenty-nine ☆ you can't date ethan

DECEMBER

narrator's pov:

"alright, since christmas break is coming soon, i've created a new seating chart," mr. frank declared, pulling out his clipboard.

"aw, we're going to be separated," corbyn sighed, looking into lillian's ocean eyes.

lillian held corbyn's hand, and squeezed it tight as she rested her head on his shoulder.

"jonah with charlotte, daniel with mackenzie, samantha with justin, kyle with lea, chloe with corbyn..." mr. frank started, walking around the classroom.

the students in his physics class began to move around and take a seat next to their new desk partner.

"hey, at least i'm with my best friend," chloe remarked, nudging at corbyn's elbow.

corbyn smiled at her, but still focused on where lillian was about to be seated.

"waverly with zach, brooke with oliver, and jack with lillian," mr. frank continued.

luckily, jack and lillian were seated right behind corbyn and chloe, so the couple was not as far away from each other as they expected.

"oh gosh, i do not trust jack with lillian," corbyn whispered.

"huh?" chloe asked.

"think about it," corbyn declared, "he started liking waverly once he found out her and jonah had something. he always goes after girls that are off-limits, and somehow gets them. oh, and he started getting interested in you when—"

"wait, what? when was jack interested in me?" chloe questioned, tilting her head.

shoot, i forgot she doesn't know about zach's feelings, corbyn thought.

"um, did i say y-you? i meant, um, waverly," corbyn stammered.

"you already mentioned waverly," chloe laughed, "what are you not telling me, corbs?"

"uh, nothing," corbyn lied, "anyways, i'm just worried about what might happen with lily."

chloe shook her head, "knowing jack, he might do that, but i doubt lills would ever leave you for him."

"well, we all thought waverly and jonah were so in love, but look at what happened," corbyn brought up.

"you definitely have a point about that," chloe agreed, subtly turning around to look at lillian and jack.

the curly-headed boy was whispering something in the brunette's ear, and they both started laughing.

"just saying, corbyn, you need to watch out for jack," chloe added, "i know he's like a brother to all of us, but that guy really doesn't know how to control his feelings."

"hey, is it okay if i sit with corbyn today?" lillian inquired, holding her lunch tray, "chloe's sitting at their table too."

"why don't we all go?" charlotte suggested, grabbing her brown lunch bag.

lillian, mackenzie, charlotte, and waverly headed to the table that the boys and chloe were sitting at.

"hey, it's like we're having a lunch party," corbyn remarked, putting his arm around his girlfriend.

the entire table laughed, and began to eat their lunch. they all talked about school, life, drama, and any other typical high school topics.

"hey, it's chloe!" a random boy shouted, walking up to their table.

chloe choked on her water, "um, ethan, what are you doing here?"

"i don't need an excuse to say hi to my girl," ethan remarked.

mackenzie, waverly, lillian, and charlotte immediately stopped what they were doing, and looked at the boys' reaction.

"um, your girl?" daniel scoffed, "you can't just claim her."

"well, when you're dating someone, they're technically yours," ethan sarcastically chuckled, "who's this guy? he seems a little stuck-up, eh?"

"hey, don't talk to daniel like that," charlotte joined in, standing up for her boyfriend.

"charlotte? is that you?" ethan inquired, looking at the other girls as well, "damn, i haven't seen you guys in a while."

"yeah, we were hoping it would stay like that forever, jalens," waverly added, rolling her eyes.

"whoa, lillian reed turner? i haven't seen you since last summer," ethan remarked.

"ethan, you need to go, now," chloe declared.

the blonde boy walked away, leaving a majority of the table in a state of confusion.

"um, so what was all of that about?" jonah asked, facing chloe.

"yeah, why is he calling you his girl?" corbyn joined in.

chloe sighed, "alright, i didn't know when i'd be able to tell you guys this, but i guess it's now. basically, i've been talking to ethan jalens for a few weeks."

"wait, s-so you guys are d-dating?" zach stammered.

"i don't know," chloe answered, "we've just been texting a lot and hanging out after school."

"why didn't you tell us?" daniel inquired.

"guys, i don't know, and i'm sorry. i didn't know how to tell you all, and i was avoiding it for a while," chloe apologized.

the boys and chloe all felt weird. daniel, jonah, corbyn, jack, and zach were the only guys in her life, and now there is someone new.

"hey, we're all still best friends, right?" chloe asked, putting her hand in the center for all of them to join, "you guys are my brothers for life."

the boys all looked at each other, hesitant to put their hands in.

"guys, please?" chloe whispered, her eyes beginning to water.

jonah took a deep breath, but still put his hand in. soon, corbyn, jack, and daniel's hands followed, but zach didn't join in.

"zach, come on," jack mumbled.

zach shook his head, and began to walk out of the cafeteria, "no, i don't approve of this. you can't date ethan."

"zach!" chloe stood up, following him.

the others remained at the table, awkward silence filling the air.

"wait, how do you guys know ethan?" daniel questioned, "he kept saying he hasn't seen you all in a while."

"um, ethan is an old friend," mackenzie lied.

the other girls looked at each other, but nodded in agreement.

except the girls knew that ethan was anything but an old friend.
