DECEMBER

narrator's pov:

the following morning, everyone woke up and began to pack up their belongings. hand-in-hand, lillian and corbyn came down the stairs.

"wow, you guys have that post-sex glow," jack teased, "did you use protection?"

corbyn rolled his eyes, "no, jack."

the curly-headed boy gasped, "what? now lily is going to have a child!"

"he was joking," waverly laughed, nudging jack in the elbow.

jack smiled. luckily, waverly and jack have been at a stable stage in their friendship, and he supports waverly and jonah being together.

"uh, who's going to drop off charlotte's stuff?" zach inquired, "not it!"

"nose goes!" jonah shouted.

everyone put a finger on their nose, but mackenzie was last do so.

"you guys are mean," mackenzie whined, pouting.

"i'll go with you," daniel whispered.

"well, that's relieving, i needed a ride home, anyway," mackenzie laughed.

-

after placing their bags and charlotte's in the back of daniel's car, mackenzie and him drove to charlotte's house.

"nervous?" daniel inquired.

"of course i am," mackenzie signed, "she probably hates me."

"it's not your fault that you already loved me before she did," daniel mentioned.

"daniel, can we clear something up?" mackenzie requested.

"sure," daniel agreed, "what is it?"

"we are never going to date," mackenzie declared, "at least not for now."

"wh-why?" daniel questioned.

"i love you, but it still feels wrong," mackenzie confessed, "charlotte is still my best friend, and i'm not going to date you even if she might say it's fine."

"oh, i see where you're coming from," daniel mentioned, shrugging.

"but, daniel, i'm always going to love you," mackenzie remarked, "i can be married to another guy for twenty years and have three kids, but you'll always still be my first love."

"i love you too, mackenzie, and i really wish we could be together," daniel admitted.

"me too, daniel," mackenzie sighed, "anyways, how are things going with college?"

"i think i want to stay here and go to the university of florida," daniel replied, "don't tell lillian, but corbyn is going to stanford."

"what?" mackenzie shrieked, "that's all the way in california."

"i know," daniel agreed, "jonah is also staying in florida, but corbyn couldn't pass up such a prestigious school."

"i wonder how lily is going to react," mackenzie said, "when is he going to tell her?"

daniel shrugged, "he's waiting for a good time."

-

the two made it to charlotte's house, and took a deep breath before ringing the doorbell. charlotte opened the door, and had no expression once she saw the two.

"hi, char, we have your stuff," mackenzie remarked, holding out charlotte's bags.

the brunette snatched her things, and shut the door to a close. mackenzie rolled her eyes, but rang the doorbell again.

"come on, charlotte, please talk to us," mackenzie requested, shouting through the door.

"what is there to talk about?" charlotte asked, opening the door.

"we need to explain ourselves," daniel joined.

charlotte sighed, "come in."

the three sat down at charlotte's kitchen table. she stated, "alright, explain."

"char, you're my best friend, but you knew that i loved daniel before you even liked him. i always lied to you about my feelings and followed what you asked me to do because i didn't want to hurt you," mackenzie explained, "i always felt like i couldn't even talk to him because of you."

"i did like you, charlotte, but i realized that i was truly in love with mackenzie," daniel added, "but, too be honest, our relationship wasn't very enjoyable and i constantly felt like i was trapped."

charlotte nodded, "i understand, and thank you guys for explaining everything to me. kenzie, i'm so sorry for how i treated you. i didn't even think about your feelings. daniel, i'm sorry for being super controlling, and i hope we can still be friends."

daniel and mackenzie smiled.

"you'll always be my best friend, charlotte," mackenzie remarked.
