Chapter - Thirty - Five - The First Challenge
Bethany's POV...
"Your Highness," A man in his late thirties says as he bows down, his jet black hair in my face and startling me at the closeness of it causing me to step back.
"Please rise," I say after getting out of my shock, my voice surprisingly firm and didn't shake from the sudden suspicious feeling that had befallen me the moment I opened the door.
He stands back up and I can clearly see his strong features that were slowly aging, his black hair with white streaks in some places and his smile was almost warm as wrinkles appeared near the corner of his eyes after years of laughing and smiling, but the look he had on his eyes didn't settle well with me, he looked crazed, his eyes flickering on every surface of my face and when he was done inspecting me, his eyes wandered past the door.
I was feeling uneasy and that wasn't a good start for this man because I always trusted my instincts after Brody and right now, they were sending me red flags but despite that, I kept a warm smile on my face and forced my body to relax a little so that I don't look as threatening.
"Salem Delarius, Your Highness," He offers his hand and I place mine in his, surprised when he didn't shake my hand but leaned down to place his lips on the back of it in a pleasant way, but nothing about this man seemed to be pleasant, not even the chivalrous gesture.
"Pleased to meet you, Salem, come in." I kept the smile on my face and opened the door more while walking to the side so he can enter, keeping the alarm bells that were going off in my head in the back of mind so I can focus on this mysterious and creepy man.
I wondered how my father could have made this man the Royal Beta when he looked so crazed, but I wasn't going to judge him on his appearance, let me just give him his chance to prove himself, you never know with these kinds of people, maybe he's just having a tough time at the moment.
I tried to convince myself not to judge him on the way he looked, but his actions seemed to be on the threatened side, how he analyzed everything and not-so-subtly looking back at me with scrutinizing gaze that made me slightly uncomfortable, but I put up a warm façade and prevented him from truly reading me, he probably thought I was a naïve little princess if he knew about what my parents had made me believe to be, but little did he know, I've been spending over a week studying and cramming in information about most things that I needed to know about werewolves and other species that I apparently was a part of.
"Where is your mate?" I ask with a raised eyebrow, it's either he ignored my request or my parents had forgotten to tell him. Either way, I was slightly annoyed that the Delta didn't come to meet me per my request.
I would've talked to him personally on the phone, but I didn't have his number available nor did my parents allow me to, which had made me a little annoyed but I had tried to accept that I still didn't have full authority, regardless if I made my father's wolf submit or not, I was still only a princess and only had so much access to everything compared to my mother and father. Albeit, I was a very important person in the kingdom, my parents as King and Queen had much much more importance and much more authority, they were the sign of the union of my world and were responsible for almost everything between the forty-six packs of the world and their work and rank was harder and higher than mine.
If you compared our importance and our work, mine would really be like a drop in the ocean compared to theirs, which freaked me out since I was planning to take the throne after Jack and I's mating ceremony due to my paranoia of Brody's return. I needed the title and the power that came after my ceremony so I can protect my kingdom properly, as a princess, I was a valuable aspect and I'm sure they wouldn't make me go out there and fight properly without my title as queen, which gave me a lot more power since all King and Queens of every world had the Goddess' blessing of immortality until their retirement. They weren't invincible, but the blessing gave you a lot more control of your wolf and your emotions than any other wolf and made the tissue and muscle around your heart and head impossibly harder and that made killing them basically impossible.
